I was at Home Depot today, and they had pussy willows for sale. Well one was half dead, and they have it to me. Id like to turn it into a bonsai, even though I know they aren't usually the bonsai of choice... I've cut off all the deas branches, what would you recommend I do now? Here's a photo. image.jpg

Since you said it was half dead, I'd let it be for a while so that it can recover. Willow make difficult bonsai, so this one will need all the strength it can get.

if i chose this species to make a bonsai i would aim towards a design to show off the flowers like a weeping or cascade or semi-cascade. This probably wouldnt be a good choice for say a masculine type tree with big thick trunk and such. More of a enjoy the flowers then hide it...like wisteria in most cases.

just curious why you said this?

Everything I've ever heard is that they're just so aggressive and hard to maintain. People always try to wire them in their typical appearance with weeping branches, but the trees fight back with all their might.

oh...im growing some cuttings out just curious. I don't let aggressiveness bother me. I actually love growing wisteria so i guess im different. I like a fast growing tree. You can usually slow them down over time and in smaller bonsai pots. If aggressiveness is all thats bad then ill take my chances. Thanks for the info and Ill be posting the cuttings next year.

for now that is a good plan until you have something to work with. Maybe wire branches when they are young and put a lot of movement into them while they are very soft.

I was looking for/if information on a "weeping" pussy willow was on the forum. Saw your post and saw you had posted it "almost" a year making this pretty much the "next year" you spoke of and was wondering how things turned out. ?????
