Here's some poorly taken shots of the tree as of tonight. I've really just let it grow without any trimming. The problem is that there are no branches on the side of the trunk, just on the front and back. Hm.

There's not much movement in the trunk, but that's some nice looking nebari. How tall do you want to make this tree?

Come repotting time, you could try and do some ground layers and bury it a little deeper to try and get some more character in the nebari. The root placement is great, but those surface roots are straight and narrow. If you did a ground layer (like the sides of every surface root) and buried it deeper for a couple-five years, I imagine you'd have a mighty impressive nebari.

Also, You should chop the top and select a leader so you can get some movement. ;)

So it's finally Spring time and this guy is pushing leaves once again. What I would like to do is clean up that chop site and cut it back at an angle. What would be the best time to do this, since it isn't really a "chop?"

I've been told that early spring is the best time to do this for a couple reasons. First, the growing is starting. The wound won't be made during dormancy so the chances of dieback are practically null. The tree is starting to push a ton of growth, so the sap flow upward will essentially pull the callus upward. This will also make it so the wound is getting as much time possible to start healing. Hopefully you get some sprouts around the cut site that will help the callus form. You can chop those later and the healing time will be much faster since they'll be smaller.

Hope this helps. :)

Sure thing, had to wait for the storm to pass. Now, I know it may not look like it, but there's a tree in there somewhere....

Just to help you out on pricing, the going rate is somewhere around $25 per caliper inch on tridents. Now, this tree does have the beginnings of a good nebari, so maybe add a few bucks for that. It has no movement...subtract a few for that. Throw some dimensions out so people can get an idea. Did you buy this from someone, or grow it from a small size? There is definitely some value in that tree! Assuming it has a 3" trunk, I have a number in my head. I guess we will see what number you decide to list it as.

Excellent, I'll have to see about the dimensions. The thing is a little bushy (just a little) so it's hard to see just what is what.

I assume I wouldn't even be able to sell this until the spring anyways, right? I couldn't bare root this thing, and there's no way I can ship it in the big pot it's in.

Probably couldn't ship it bare rooted, spring would be easiest. Maybe a PM silent auction?
