Current year growth is lighter in color than old needles. That's one way to tell when they have "hardened off".

Hi Brian,

Thank you for the quick link.

The seller told me the big one is a "Taihei" and the smaller one is a "Gansekisho".

I found the following link about Taihei
http://nebaribonsai.wordpress.com/2012/10/05/styling-a-corkbark-black-pine/

Can't find anything on the Gansekisho.

Sincerely,

J

Wow, what an amazing site! Great bonsai, great photos, great writing...that guy is outstanding! ;-)

Taihei has fantastic bark, just takes FOREVER for it to do anything at all...forget summertime candle-pruning, I'm treating mine like a white pine. I suspect Dave DeWire propagated yours as well.

Here is the information I have on the Gan-seki-sho:

Keep us posted on their development, that Taihei can become a great bonsai, hopefully in our lifetimes!

You've got some good material there. Stick with it, and you'll have some fine bonsai.

Oh is that your website? lol oops ya what a great site!!! a great site indeed.

the guy told me the Taihei tree is between 30-40 or 40-50 yr old. and the smaller Gan-Seki-Sho is about 20-30. I'll take some additional photos and ask for ideas....gonna find me some copper wires from my father work place.

Sincerely,

J
