First...I didn't want to hijack NiBonsai12's thread:)
I've done a fair amout of reading on JWP's and their need for the "cold snap" in winter. Of course I purchased this beauty before I did the research.
It's a grafted white pine on JBP stock. I've read and been told to get in the cold in winter.
I've kept it at my mother in law's in Northern Cal for the last two winters...in fact, sadly, the tree's still up there...being taken care of, of course.
I just haven't been able to get back yet this year...thankfully... on one hand:)
I read Nybonsai12's post on July 10, 2013 (Great tree BTW) recently...it came up that perhaps the fact that if a JWP is grafted on JBP...It might be able to survive here in my zone (9)???
Here are a couple pics before I took her up last fall:

Nice tree Fraser,
I can't answer your question, but I've heard things about refrigeration being used in some extreme hot climates to give the cold dormancy these want.
But that's taking up a lot of beer space...

I do like your tree, very nice movement, you could get some really nice shaping done with some wire.

Grafted or not without a winter chill they will not live long term here. I know some will disagree but I'd like to see one that has been living here at least 10 years-never have yet.
I've tried the refrigaration bit too- over three years I watched lots of pines, hemlocks and larches wither and die. It may work for a year or two but not long term.

Something about putting a tree in a fridge just doesn't sound right to me...I prefer beer:)
I might have to consider a trade??? Just thinking out loud... It's sad because it's my favorite tree

I posted a topic here: Help needed in Japan. I wanted to buy grafter white pine too. Posted on another 4 forums the same question. The answer was the same everywhere: It needs minimum of 120 days of at least 1-4 degree C to survive....and I am talking here minimum day and night temperature. I still bought 2...going to put a glass on top of an old deep freezer, and go that way. I just love them too much.

Yes, I think you should consider to trade it! It will not live strong in Southern California ( I don't want to say it will not survive in here!). I know a lot of people in Northern California really like any kind of pines. If you want to trade there, you might put it in the Craigslist, I bet you will find someone. Good luck.
