With all that out of the way....3 hours....

I can finally pot the damn thing. It will reside in a pot that my son made in high school. He made it in 1994 and I had my other Trident maple in it. The other maple outgrew the pot and now this one can have a ride in the pot.

The tree looks just a little small for the pot but thats because I have yet to grow the tertiary branches on the tree. The tree should finish out about 15 percent larger making the pot just about right.

Yea he has way lot more talent than I.

His real passion is guitar. He has been playing since he was about 12 years old. I taught him all the chords I know, enough to play "house of the risen sun" and in a week he had figured out "Stairway to Heaven". I just said , carry on, I have nothing to add.

He is doing about 500.00 a month with his music and most of the sales are from Europe. I hope they invite him for a concert someday, maybe I can tag along and be a roadie!

I have to agree 100%. There's something about white or cream thin oval pots that I just love and that one looks really well made.

That's going to be a great tree Al. As all of the Blue and Valley oaks around Chico have lost their leaves, I've been struck again by their gnarliness and beauty. This tree has a lot of the same feeling to me as the Blue oaks in the California foothills and I can't recall any other Trident which has struck me like that. Looking forward to its continued development.

After this root work, will you give the tree any special protection through through the winter? Do you prefer to repot your Tridents at this time of year instead of in the spring? I have pretty similar temperatures up here in Chico and have been hesitant to do much root work in the winter if I can avoid it.

That's already such a beautiful tree. I can't wait until I start finding material like that. I can't believe you got it so cheap! Must've been some "law of attraction" sorta thing? :D

Thanks for posting. And, as people've said before me, the pot is awesome. Perfect match for the tree, in my eyes.

Soooo Good. And potter/musician is an interesting combo...
If he tours EU, keep in mind I'm a sound engineer and electrician!;) You can pay me in pots! (or trees...) (or pots and trees...)

Wow dude, that tree is pretty amazing. I can't wait to see you work your maple magic on this one. Are you gonna bring it for us to drool over at the meeting?

Oh and are you potting already? I've only repotted a few rooted cutting and seedlings, but I figured it was kinda early.

you californians are starting to make me sick with your growing seasons ...... :) :)

Capitalize that when your casting aspursions......

I would trade you a milder summer in a heartbeat.

Today I had to repot this tree. It was already starting to push buds and within a day or two it will already need to be first leaf pinched.

We had a couple weeks in the high 60's and low 70's so it looks like the roots have been growing for a couple weeks.

I chopped back all the roots and planted it back into the hand made pot. I used a more coarse soil mix in an effort to get better rootage on the one side. Notice above that one side had dark roots while the other side had white long roots. The dark shorter rooted side of the tree is weaker.
