I had to look this one up Marc about the peach thing. "continuous, unflagging effort, persistence and determination will win. (remember thar word win). Let not the man be discouraged who has these.
Here is the problem Marc, I wouldn't have any of these bonsai if it wasn't for competition. In my days we had a fierce rivalry amoung the bonsai bullies in my area. I would lay in bed every night and go over my collection species by species comparing them to my peers. I will never forget when a certain person found a better buttonwood than what I had. It was devastating. I wanted to strangle the person. I had bonsai rage.

When I started with bonsai two years ago it soon became obvious that I wouldn't be able to make a bonsai from a seedling during my lifetime. By 'a bonsai' I mean a ripe tree. I've seen ripe bonsai, and they look awesome. I don't live far from Danny Use's place, and he has some.
This whole notion of competition in the sense of making a better tree than someone else is strange to me. You can't compare trees made by masters.
Of course competition is a healthy thing, but not in bonsai.

Oh my, the Marshal got caught with his pants down.

I just took a tour of Danny Use bonsai nursery. Marc, no wonder you are down in the dumps. Good heavens what a nursery and what material. You see, I couldn't live next to this Danny Use. It is overwhelming. I would have to move. Make yourself stop going there. I don't know if he imports or grows and collects or a little of everything. It would be very hard to scratch grow bonsai with Danny as a neighbor...very hard. I feel your pain. What a place!

He has imported bonsai and prebonsai, and bonsai and prebonsai he grows himself.
One can spend hours there.

Hi Marc. Your above statement is a very good one and very true! When I met Randy Knight of Oregon Bonsai a few years ago I too came to this conclusion very fast. I then met some other big name folks in the bonsai world, some from Europe, some from America and some who studied in Japan and they all had the same thoughts. If you want to have a very good bonsai from seedling or a seed then you better plan to live past 200 years old! Not to mention that most seedlings don't live past 15-20 yrs in the forest.

While I have never been to Danny Use's place I have several friends who have and they rave about the material and the great person he is. I will make it there one of these days, I will and when I do I will make sure to look you up so you can buy me a beer, haha!!

Thanks Hans, any chance of you or Walter or both doing a little Q & A about a more interesting topic like European Bonsai and their people? I have a few questions if you don't mind.

KK,

why don't you open an new thread and post your questions. We will then make fun of them. Or maybe answer some seriously.

I guess it's worth a try Walter thanks. We can punish Harry and praise me...those will be the only stipulations. What shall we title the thread?

Soft Island breezes and lots of Mai Tai's brings exotic mystery guests. Our staff is working on a European visit at the moment which is kinda to the East but please don't feel left out. Maybe we can send Harry to help cool down that lava with a Mai Tai or three.

KK wont do it. I have seen many like him in my days, sucker-punch & their outta dodge!
or maybe hes looking in his bag of seeds =)

Hey Can, chill, have a Pina Colada or two and enjoy life on one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's 15 degrees with a wind chill of zero here in Oklahoma and I'm having a great time.

call it "KK's questionnaire"

I like it! I got my notebook out, taking a few notes, reading a little background, talking to a local 'know it all' and will be ready to roll soon with some interesting info.

KK, stop avoiding the question. Yes or No. Are you up for a re-match?
