This is a spectacular tree! High end exhibition quality. The fun you are going to have when it is time to style is going to be off the charts. I cannot wait to see this one cleaned up.;)

I'm glad you have this tree. So much potential, and I know you will capitalize on it.

What will you do with the Dale Cochoy pot it was in? I bought that pot for a trident maple root over rock. As I recall, I had Dale make the pot specifically for the tree. But I sold the tree before I ever put it in the pot. I had the pot sitting around empty for several years waiting for something, anything, to go in it. When I repotted the shimp I decided to try Dale's pot. It worked for me, so I went with it. Its a high quality pot, but the look and finish is not for everyone.

Feed and trim and it will tighten back up with compact foliage. Then you can really have fun.
This is May of 2009.

Thanks Don, appreciate the compliment. Bjorn and I laid out a plan that was about identical to your post...pump it up, prune it in a couple months and watch it pop back.

On the pot...no plans, I actually stuck a JWP in it that I transplanted and will be nursing back to health for a friend; it seems to dry out fast, and it was just the right size. Are you interested in having it back at some point?

This one reminds me of my son, who's been in need of a haircut since Easter...his new nickname is Sheepdog;). The tree looks soooo healthy. I've never seen an Itoigawa this size have a canopy this full. Will this one get a haircut soon? My son is penciled in for this coming Friday:).

After several hours of roasting to perfection at our neighborhood pool party, it was time to trim...first the weak & yellow interior stuff, then the strong running shoots.

Brian, how do you get the red in the live veins to stand out so well? Is is just a matter of brushing off the outer layer of bark, or do you also treat it with something?

Very special product called Trunk Shine. Comes from Japan, hard to find. I have a small bottle and could sell you some but it is expensive. It is colorless and odorless, and nontoxic.

kidding...it's just wet from the rain ;-)

So funny... Put it in a little 4 oz bottle at $80 with some Japanese writing on it (the Japanese should translate to "sucker").

You literally had me going until the very end. I was thinking ..."what's in it? Some kind of oil?"

Seriously does anyone know if there is away to get those dull chalky live veins to shine?

Exfoliate the bark and sand very lightly with a very high grit sandpaper. I have heard of rubbing with a light oil but have no direct experience with this.

You prolly could get about $100 for a bottle of that rain water from someone out in Cali right about now...
