Nice! Funny you're posting this now...my wife is going to by me one of his willow leaf root cuttings for my anniversary gift. Love all the funky shapes.

Jason grows great trees. I have PT residence not far from his nursery and have encountered numerous well known nurseries picking up early spring inventory.

I am so fond of willow ficus. I can only imagine what my yard would look like if I lived in Florida. I would love to visit a number of nurseries down there. I'm very envious. On a side note where does one find pots like this?
I am a lot like you thams in that I like the little funky shaped shohins.

On a side note where does one find pots like this?

at the risk of sounding glib or (worse) coy, that depends on how much you want to spend.

i've had good luck with the japanese nurseries on eBay, although some of them are inflating the hell out of their list prices for the west. you can also order directly from the tokoname website. for example, this one's fun (albeit, around $50 + appr $12 SAL shipping to the US).

as much as I hate to say it, if you're on facebook check out (and join) the BONSAI CLASSIFIEDS page. they're now running an auction every other week & there's been some dandy containers on there. like all auctions, it's hit and miss --- but, it's diverting just to watch.

oh, if you ARE on Facebook and haven't already LIKED the potter / mame artist haruyosi I'd encourage you to do so. he doesn't sell on there, but both his pots & his trees are so inspiring it will take your breath away.

don't be shy about asking Ryan to keep an eye out for something on your behalf. I think a lot of people figure that because he writes about high end pots, that's all he brokers. but if you contact him (email details are on his blog) with a price range and some idea of what you're after, he'll send you pix as relevant containers pop up --- or let you know if he's unable to assist. but, he loves the hunt, so like I said don't be shy.

hope that helps

I agree with everything rps said. Ryan is a great resource and has helped me out in the past finding pots for my trees.

Also, the facebook BONSAI CLASSIFIED page is great for finding odds and ends for the hobby. Although there aren't any painted pots exactly like that one up for bid, Matt did post some reasonably priced painted pots for auction (starting bid $25 I think, free shipping). If you're not worried about rarity or exclusivity, then I'd start there.

Good luck!

Not to highjack your thread, but I just ordered this little cutting this morning from Schley's. I like the really low movement in the trunk. I'm hoping for a finished height of under 8".

I know. I like them all. Some of the pics show reverse taper. I wish the pics were a little better. Different angles. But they are prebonsai so what can I expect?

I agree that it's difficult to see what's going on in some of the photos. There's so much branching in some cases that I can't tell what's what. I love root cutting so much that I wish I could have them all.

I especially love this cascade root cutting from Adam ask why --

Sanctuary has some nice ficus for sure. I love the one that's $500 and in a Lenz pot. Wish I had that kind of money because the tree is really nice and it's a chance to own a Lenz pot as well.

This is not a Salicaria, though I have many, but this is a Retusa 'Kinmen'/'Tigerbark'....whatever that I paid $25 for and chopped in half immediately after purchasing it from Old Florida Bonsai to start a shohin tree. Just happened to notice that price tag in that last picture....

A year later. Not near finished. Just begining its development. Amazing how you can cut every single root off of these and put them directly into a tiny pot.

Carp, how big is that nursery pot, 8 inch?

ya i think it was.
the trunk is about 3-4 inches at the roots, but i've never actually measured with a tape.
the tree before the chop was prolly like a foot and a half tall? maybe? i really don't remember cuz i chose the tree specifically for a shohin and cut it as soon as i got to my apartment at the time.

When I ordered that tree, it turned that it was sick (I think from a cold spell) and dropped all its leaves. Instead he sent me a replacement tree - Jason was nice enough to send me pictures of several options to choose from. The one I selected had the best nebari.

It needs years of development, but I think it's going to be a pretty cool tree in the end. First pic is the cleaned up and wired pic and the second is the pic Jason sent me before I purchased it.

I asked him to hold the ficus until it was warmer here. They will ship Monday. Can't wait to see them.

So the trees I ordered were not shipped to me. They were in the pots I ordered but not the actual tree from the photo. I didn't expect this and was not informed a substitution would be made. The roots also were poor. Disappointed in what I thought would be a quality purchase.
So far wigerts has never let me down. Might stick with that.
