I thought I posted this last fall when I collected but can't find the post. I found this interesting specimen I think is a scrubby kind of oak. Based on other growth in the area it seems like a White Oak, but when I collected (very late November) there were of course no leaves. I got some completely justifiable flack on the forum for collecting at the wrong time and most speculated a dead tree come spring.
After a super nasty winter, I suspected that this guy had died. Not so. The buds all over the tree are swelling and ready to pop. This one makes me so happy because it’s a local tree – a part of Minnesota that I get to watch on my deck every day.
The base is about 3" across and the whole tree is about 36" tall. There is a ton of natural jin and shari. I will follow this up in a week or so after leaves have popped. Really excited to have this cool deciduous in the collection and looking forward to helping it become a nice small tree in a pot some day.
