I the Philippines it is never used in spaghetti sauce but it is used a lot in adobo. Yummm! Cultural difference/preference?

Vin, if you crush the leaves you can definitely tell.

BTW, I agree, nice tree. :)

What's kind of weird is I have crushed/snapped the leaves and sometimes they smell like bay leaves and sometimes they don't. I'm going to post a photo of one of the trees and hope for some feedback. Also, I remember the branches that extend from the trunk are dark green while the trunk is light brown; I think?

Bay Tree??

Leaves look different than yours ABCarve. However, today they smell like bay leaves. Dario, see what I mean about the trunk being brown but the branches are green?

Where are you at in Hawaii? I was stationed on Oahu at Schofield Barracks from 05-08. I was able to visit the big island and even play in the snow at the Mauna Kea observatory. That was a real trip for me.

I would LOVE to make it back later in my career. Unfortunately a lot of my trees wouldn't survive there...I dont recall it ever dipping below 65º F...and the rain was biblical.

3 minutes from Hawaii Volcanos National Park.

The lowest left branch is starting to harden off and mature at the base - they will all turn eventually ;) Pretty normal in my notes.

There are two trees commonly refered to as bay. In the southern region that would likely be a Camphor-tree, Cinnamomun camphora, and out west here it's most likely, California-laurel/Oregon-myrtle aka 'Pepperwood', Umbellularia californica. These I can gather by the dozens with a thirty mile drive.

Does you tree also make bayberries? These we collect and cook down for bayberry candles. Lots of medicinal qualities in all these trees.

Well today I had anothe busy one-
Watered My buddy's trees
Watered my trees
Repotted a bunch of cuttings from March- Juniper Sargenti not Shimpaku- because there were too many weeds in the pot and separated out some MORE Amur Maple seedlings... I was AMAZED by the roots these juniper cuttings developed in a couple months- separated each out and I don't expect any trouble with them...

Pruned an azalea for the 5th time or so this season

Worked on the apex of a Juniper I have been styling for a couple months..

Pretty busy day!

I read up on it and you are correct it's definitely a Camphor. Unfortunately, it's not the same as the tree used for Bay Leaves in cooking. Thanks!

As usual, got all the plants neat and where I wanted them yesterday for the heat wave and right now I am watching awesome amounts of rain - I thought I was going to sit out and enjoy them and my coffee :( Oh well.

wait til tomorrow when the Himacane brushes the Atlantic coast. Now a Category 1, I have already received warnings from the county to be ready for flooding beginning at 1PM on July 3, and I live 3-1/2 hrs from the coast. The storm was approaching NC this morning. Batten down the hatches!

There you go. I didn't see your post earlier but even if I did, am not familiar with Camphor so can't help you anyway. :D

Re: the aroma, as you learned, various trees share the same aroma. Some exhibit different intensity due to various factors; age, sun exposure, health, to name a few. Usually, aroma is strongest on mature leaves.

They predicted heavy thunderstorms for my area last night, but this area is weird and known for its patchy weather. I debated watering last night in case it did rain, but the last few times they predicted heavy rain, my house was dry while 50 miles away got drenched. The trees needed to be fed at the same time so I decided to water. Glad I did. Woke up this morning everything was dry. The other end of the island and north and west of the city got drenched.

I am in PA center of the Pocono Mountains and the Jersey Shore. The Shore is an average hour drive and everyone freaks a bit when things get as they predict. We had torrential rain this morning for a solid hour, then it cleared out. Seems to happen a lot though - kind of on the edge of it all which makes in a bit unnerving.

I know exactly what you mean Grimmy, I grew up in Reading.

I've been plowing through the work, tending my trees. I have a tendency to let things drop where there are when I'm done with them and I'm on the move.

Just before I screamed out loud, didn't, caught it just before, as I tripped on an accumulating pile of roots around my workbench and almost stabbed myself with my shears.....approaching the bench to tackle yet another project!

Ok, hold on there just a cotton pickin minute! Put everything down, catch your breath and grab a rake. Pick up those pots and stack them in the shed and stack the empty boxes nice and neat. Scoop up all the refuse soil and tote it out to the garden. Spent most of the day putting my shop back in order and Pappy is happy again, and folks, when Pappy aint happy, there's no joy in the garden. Where's that kid when you need him, 'sposed to keep this place picked up?

If you want it done at all, do it yourself and once in awhile you just have to turn from the trees and get happy again. All in a day, Rick

I repotted a mugo pine that I slipped into the grow garden last fall. I sawed off the bottom half of the root ball, but unfortunately I found a lot of root rot. So, after removing all the black roots, I had nearly bare rooted the tree. It has a nice trunk and I hope like hell it survives. I placed it under a shady tree. It's in a pond basket with a good draining bonsai soil mix.

How do you know the roots were rotted?

Do you have pictures?

There was enough rain last night and this morning to give me the day to paint the kitchen :( I did notice those Azaleas I cut way back are throwing out a lot more new growth and I only had to upright one Juniper after the severe stuff yesterday. Looking forward to Beer Chili and Steak Burgers later! Happy 4th :)
