First off I took a trip to Lowes today to browse the trees and see if anything stuck out to me. I came across small Ellwood Cypress, it looks like a neat little plant but it's not something I've found to much info on has anyone else used these for bonsai with successful results?

Secondly I have a large Hinoki Cypress (about 4'6") and a Japanese maple (about 4'). I pulled both of these trees off a brush pile a few years ago because I thought they were interesting but only ever pruned them to keep them from becoming a bushy mess never to be a bonsai. So I was wondering if you could start a tree from a cutting with these two species? If so should I use the root growing hormone I have or let them grow themselves?

I will attach pictures of the Hinoki Cypress and Japanese Maple. I'm sorry they are not the best quality I only have my webcam available to take pictures.

Yes, you will be able to make cuttings with these trees. I would think layering would be more successful with the maple. I might try and use the hinoki as a bonsai depending on if it is grafted or not.

Wow! If I were 30 years younger, I'd just dig up the maple!

Can't even see the other one it is so dark.

Unfortunately I do not know if the Hinoki is grafted or not, they were on a brush pile that was set to be burned and the owner said I could have them so before that I know nothing of their history. Would there be any way to tell just by looking at it?

Digging up the maple is a thought but I'm pretty sure my lady friend would kill me if I started digging up the yard for my new hobby :p
