This tree was field grown at Telperion in a bag 5years from 2yr cutting(7yr) until digging in Feb.13. Bare-rooted, washed and potted in Feb.13 in an Anderson tray and freely grown until late Oct.14. Two cuts were made to branches in Nov.12 and no further work has been done until now. This is a basic initial wiring to head it in a direction. I guess the point is, mugos respond like any and all pines if you understand pines. No candles were cut but back-budding was profuse even on the primary trunk.

That was an excellent piece of material you chose. Looks to be heading towards a very nice tree. Swiss Mountain pines are under appreciated. I find them to be a very interesting species.

I don't know where thats located but I believe it to be the name of a tree from a Tolkien story. I just recently came across a tree by that name with the explanation.

Telperion is something like the first or eldest tree. I believe the tree in Gondor is a decendant. Telperion is referenced in the Silmarillion.
As to where Telperion Farms is that easy. The thing called the Internet is where they are by golly.

Beautiful mugo! How do you get it bare rooted so clean without killing it? That's fascinating.

Yes, I was wondering about that - dug and bare-rooted (!) in February. Interesting.

It's great to see someone else going after a Mugo Pine. Let us all know how it does this next year. I also cannot believe that I missed this thread when it first appeared?

Thumbless, there are a few things that are constant and predictable.
#1 all temperate trees begin root movement @about 40f. soil temp
#2 There is stronger growth in spring. Study growth rings.
#3 High humidity is a plus or mist
#4 Vigorous tree makes a big difference
#5 understanding that healthy, vigorous trees always have more roots than they "need" as insurance
#6 leaving abundant foliage and tips ensures root/shoot exchange for photosynthesis and hormone exchange
#7 Stomata efficiencies is at its functional minimum
#8 I'm tired of typing ;-)

It's ok I guess... You know, if you like beautiful, old looking well styled trees and stuff like that.

Great job Gary! M
