I look in aquarium stores and ebay but nothing really interesting to be used. I couldn't even find anything here in the sticks either.

I think they have a pill for that now:cool:

Try construction sites where they are ripping out old trees. Or some place where they are logging. There's a good chance you'll find something interesting. You nay need to let to season before you can use it.

Hi, Out here in Oregon I find lots of potential tanuki stock. The best places to find is along creeks and rivers, in the flood plains where wash out trees are deposited after a flood. Also around mountain lakes, in the back waters and eddies all kinds of debris is deposited, lots of old rootwads. I find alot of yew and western red cedar pieces. They're out there, but you might have to get wet and dirty to get at them, a small boat helps or some nice waders. Best of luck, Rick

Andy Smith of Golden Arrow sells some really interesting deadwood. I live near Lake Michigan, I occasionally find a nice piece of driftwood, and since the lake is fresh water, no need to worry about salt. Driftwood from saltwater needs to be soaked in fresh water for a while, with regular water changes, to leach out salt that may have seeped into the wood.

If you know a local landscaper, you might be able to get interesting roots dug out of old landscapes. Walking in the woods once in a while turns up some nice wood.

Here's a few examples of what I find at the lakes here.
trying to show more, but the pics wont come up.

I have a ton of stuff like this laying around the place, been picking up sticks and rocks and bringing them home since forever. I know places where there's pickup loads to be gathered. Lost Creek Lake and Diamond Lake are loaded with drifters.

I always seem to think everyone is as much into the woods as I am. I know not everyone lives near forests or can not travel to them. I know some folks fear spiders and snakes and, oh my, there's bears out there (try not to smell like lunch).LOL

I'm not saying I've been everywhere, but I've covered this country well enough (I've been where you are:)) and I can tell you there is neat stuff everywhere, without exception, you just have to get out there and see what mother nature's been stirring up.

I picked up a nice ash juniper stump on a ditch a few months ago that I plan on using for tanuki. It cleaned up really well and I just hope I can do it justice. I'll try to snap a pic tomorrow if I get a chance.

I think you're smart to ask around and look and not just use any old stick. Going to all the trouble of tanuki making may as well use something special. Authentic weathering of wood exposed to the elements for years is nice, probably find that through golden arrow. A highly decay resistant wood would be smart.

I sent a few tanuki bits out your way last year, traded for pot, bonsai pot. Last I heard he had decided not to tanuki. I could ask if he wants to send them on if you want? Here's one of them.

Ahh, pic later I guess, uploading problems.
