As I posted last week, I had the good fortune to go up an meet Mauro Stemberger along with Hank Faucette (spelling?). Beautiful trees...great garden!!
They had been out collecting California Junipers all morning. There was quite a collection from previous outings building up. More on that in a bit...
As luck would have it, a few days later, Mauro had put some trees up on Bonsai Auctions (facebook).
I bit the bullet, now or never...I scored one of his CJ's for a surprisingly low price (compared to what many of them go for).

It's big...over 4' tall. The tub it's currently in is 32". Collected in 2013.
It's heavy...Damp DG and pumice...I'm going to the chiro tomorrow lol.
Yes, the foliage is thin, however...it's very happy. I've been instructed to only feed it for 2 years.
Mauro is a wealth of information and very happy to pass it along...I'm all ears.
1. He prefers (I agree) the native foliage. It takes time, but it will thicken up and get more compact.
By feeding and eventually training. So no, I've no intention of grafting.
2. Fertilizer (uh oh)...they've been using organic in the soil and spraying the foliage with Bonthrive once
a week. The foliage in their garden looked (and felt) strong, thick and very healthy!
3. Soil...according to Hank...at collection...is a toss up. Straight Perlite, straight DG, straight Akadama...
they've had luck with all and failures with all. Regardless of the mix...it is all non organic.
4. As much sun as I can give it...I put it in really, the only spot in my yard that gets most of the days sun.
This was taken at 5:30 pm. The Pepper tree is just hiding the white bucket lol...

So...Mauro has agreed to help me style this puppy in a couple years...for that I am thankful and thrilled!!
I wonder how long it will take my wife to notice hahaha!!
What do ya'll think?

That pepper tree better grow fast, or you're busted!

You better go head and tell her!

Nice, glad you intend to keep the foilage!

Looks like a shady spot, would be my only concern. Looks like great material! I just collected a massive juniper as well this year, it's right at the limit of being able to move it by myself. You could graft as well, maybe kishu, so many fun options with large trees.
