image.jpg I've searched the Internet with a bunch of different routes to go. Well, today I was bored and went to Lowe's and this Dwarf Bloodgood Japanese Maple caught my eye, I like how it's base splits. So, I got it! Now, should I trim it down or re-pot it first? I'm looking for real world advice, not Internet how to. Thank you in advance.

I know it's a little late to re-pot but, I didn't trim the roots. I just wanted to get it out of the potting soil and into Bonsai Soil, I also tried something new. This is the same tree as above, just in a trainer pot with a bit of attitude now!

Trim first, repot last, so you don't disturb the roots.
I kind of like the line of the left trunk, and would be tempted to cut off the right one.

I agree with this. I would cut off the left trunk and airlayer at that point with the top of the airlayer right at the top of the branch collar.

FYI Bloodgoods dont seem to make great bonsai. They have very long internodes and large leaves. This tree will be great for learning on though.

I have had one for 3-4 years that had a grafted trunk and a taperless trunk with a "Y" in it.
I have finally come to the conclusion that it will never be a nice bonsai, so yesterday I chopped it right below the graft. Will be interesting to see if it wants to sink or swim.
