Before heading out yesterday to fish the Des Plaines, I read a bit of history on it.
Turns out the name comes from the trees along the river, Red Maple and Sycamore, which reminded the French travelers of the Plane tree back home!

Trees!

Here is a maple, in a fashion I am quite fond of. Oh deadwood on maple is OK and almost necessary to make it look real to me!20150503_091445_HDR.jpg

That's the bridge I got that Northern off of. Right past the right pier.

Also in the history was a part on serial killers Gacy and Dahmer, who both disposed of bodies in the river. There are more recent bodies in there too, and I'm sure some they don't know about!

Last year, I found a set of sutures someone must have tossed over the bridge, used em last night to hold some wire while pulling it off Boon style.

This year I found this. ....
Murder weapon?

Anyway. I'll update this thread with other interesting Des Plaines trees, fish, and factoids!

Enjoy!

Well. I found a neat little tree growing right in a little runoff ditch on the riverbank.

Got to poking around and found a campsite getting exposed by erosion.
Here's some pottery.
Some Buffalo Pottery from 1911.
Some with letters Germa, reckon its German. And one other.

Pretty cool stuff.

And a cold cream bottle from Richard Hudnut, New York. Also early 1900's.

Looks like it still has Noxema in it! Did you try rubbing some on yourself? To see if it's still good?
The cold cream not rubbing.

Another trip on the 4th. Had to walk up 1st Ave, 35mph posted, folks do 50 usually. Curvy too, And right dangerous.

Saw a Blue Jay feather, and turning to grab it, found this feller by the curb. Got hit, took out both legs and maybe a wing. I moved it into some cover in the shade.

Shoulda killed it, but I had no humane means.

Man,that's too bad. He doesn't look that bad off. Maybe he is just learning to fly. Maybe the last landing was a little rough. I think you maybe did the right thing.

Watersnake?

I saw one the other day. Crawled under some rocks and disappeared. Awesome!
Real pretty.

I never used to see any here.
I let a mother and a couple babies go in H.S. circa 1997, right by the river. Now I see em all the time, makes me wonder!

Watch them. They are notorious biters. Very aggressive. Not venous thankfully. But they are pretty.
Fished Bass club world championship on Erie a few years ago. We launched from Sandusky bay. It was full of them. Everywhere! Getting in boats, scaring grown men to death. It's funny to see the competition scream like girls.

Thanks man. My morning taking the path of excrement.
Needed some "brightening" to my day. Pics did it.
Thanks again.

Get out on the water! Makes me and Sorce feel like a million bucks. Nothing like it to put the world into perspective. Especially at sunrise.

When I fish, I bring a cooler with my beverage choice of the day, a good book, and I deliberately toss the line in with no bait, sometimes no hook. I love the alone time, and don't have to get interrupted by those pesky fish. (actually I do bait the hook, but for as much as I catch, I may as well have skipped hook and bait. But I do like a day along a lake or river, "doin' nothin'".

DesPlaines river has a fascinating ecology. Near where it joins the Illinois there are some very unique plant communities on the sandstone bluffs, including a rare geographic sub-species of Pinus resinosa, American Red Pine. Also on the same bluffs one of the few places where indigenous Rhododendrons can be seen. In other areas there are remnants of the original lowland deciduous forest, with all manner of tree species. And of course if you are into "history of organized crime" there are a couple sites noted as favored places to dispose of bodies. If you find an abandoned car in the water - don't open the trunk!

Post Rain.

Nice day to flick an Ugly Stick.
Damn that Ginkgo thread! Makes me wanna fish!

So a Lotta nothing. Craw. No. Spinner. No. Topwater. No.

So I grabbed this lil. Wallydiver I found in the spring, took some hooks off a different broken lure and put em on it. 51ws C0LG5L._SX522_.jpg

What a bitch. The whole time I'm thinking, "I hope this is worth it".
Got the second one off and realized the back had a mini key ring on it already, so I doubled em.

La la la. This gal pops up.20150810_190858.jpg

And at the same time I saw her I hooked into this.....
