These guys really grew well after their initial cut back after blooming and were in need of a trim, so here they are. What do you think?

John

First Up:

I can't remember the name, but has smallish redish-pink flowers on it. Before:

Really nice flair at the bottom:

After. I will most likely shorten the thick branch on the right later, I think it is too long.DSC00668-1.jpg

Next we have the smaller sportier one. This is a Kurume known a Fuscia, or so I was told by the guy I brought it from. Before:

After:

But wait, there's more:

I don't know what the name of this one is, I believe it to be Kurume, it has a really nice double red bloom.

After:

And then there is this triple trunk Chujohu, a satsuki:

After. It really doesn't look like I removed much, but I actually did.

On a side note, does anyone have an effective way to rid pots of weeds? A proven herbicide? I have a huge problem with oxalis and some kind of green stuff (seen in the first tree's pot). I can weed today and by next week, it looks as if I have done nothing. I wish my trees grew as well as the weeds.

You have to completely eradicate them when you repot- bare root the damn thing if you have to... Get them all out. If even one sliver of root is left, your whole pot will be full again within months.., they are nearly impossible to kill without killing the tree too if you use any sort of spray.. Then it is a matter of staying on top of it once the tree is potted again. Obviously pulling them out is part of that, but ground cover can help too- Moss being the most obvious choice there of course.

I have room for all of those as it seems you must be running out of room by now :p I have some problems with clover from time to time and just weed the pot a couple times. I have more of a problem with Squirrels planting trees and grape hyacinths. Different Zones different problems. I agree with Eric but that process is labor and time intensive especially if you have large plants. I would be interested in what others say on weed control - sure would be helpful.

I really like the triple trunk. The abrupt transition from lower part of the trunk to upper is a bit strange, and I wonder if growing out the branch you've clipped out at the top could help to remedy that.

I have pulled all of them out when I repotted and tried to stay on top of regular weeding, all to no evail, at times they seem to grow over night.

Don't even get me started on Squirrels, I have the little S##ts.

The transition is not as abrupt in person, just a photo angle.

Thanks for all of the comments.

Update: Just a little off the top on the first one in the OP. I will most likely cut the first branch on the right back further, I think it is too long. What do you think?

First pic seems yes.
It doesn't look that bad in this last pic.
Assuming it's being grown for flower display, I'd make the decision then.

Update:

The first one in the OP got a trim. I really need to start individual threads on these, it took forever to find the post. Where are my pots @sorce?

Anyway, I gave this one a trim, probably at the expense of flowers next spring but it had really gotten out of hand. This was the second trimming this year.

Looking good!

Crazy...so much has been going on, I haven't thought about it for a while...

But I just thought about it yesterday.

Nice trunk on that one. Looks like it deserves a pot next year.

Agree on that right branch. It looked worse in the first pic but not as bad in the last set.

Thanks, guys. I actually have some growth a little lower on that branch and I could chop it lower but it has healed most of the chop at the top.

I haven't worked with azaleas yet but want to dive in with a couple of cheaper nursery trees. Any particular types to look for or avoid? I know there are several different cultivars but I'm not sure what my box stores have. Thanks guys.

I really like the structure of the first two! I enjoy seeing the azaleas and crape myrtles from you guys south of me, thanks for sharing. I bought a little small one to learn with, so these posts help a lot to learn when and how to trim.
