I had a little time yesterday evening and decided to give two of my elms, a shohin cork bark and a winged one, a much needed trim. This is the second one this year, I did not have time to take pictures the first time around. What do you think?

John

First up, the winged one (Before):

After, nothing fancy, just going for a natural type elm:

Next, the corked one, before:

After, I grew this one form a small air layer. It has a nice flare at the bottom, but it is covered with soil now.
I hope to get into a pot next Spring.

That can't be good for your shears! But nice job on the corker, it's looking well made. You might not want to wrap the wire around the cork bark, on the trunk, it can be easily pulled off.

And now is the time to wire some movement into the nest of straight upper branches.

Me likes... Curious how large an area you actually have there? Perhaps sometime we could see some pictures of it? Again good work!

My area is not as large as I wish it was, five years ago before I got a divorce, I had five acres, now just a residential lot. I have it worked out, but more room would be nice. I will take some pictures tomorrow.

Here is one from last year of the azalea area:

No divorce here but in Dec 2013 we also moved from 5 acres to a small Townhouse. I sometimes miss the space but never miss the work

Yes I love having all the space we have here, but I am always wishing I could spend the time working on trees, that I spend on maintenance.

Like mowing grass. Of all the maintenance I hate mowing grass. Living in a swamp makes it grow so fast it could use it twice a week.

I feel your pain, I wasn't close to a swamp but the soil was really fertile, I was always cutting grass. I don't miss that aspect, but I miss the room. If I got more trees or struck some cuttings I just made a new bench, can't do that here.

Love the benches! I use 5 gallon buckets instead of concrete blocks but it looks like I put that together.
As you have some nice trees sitting on them.

Thanks, Mike. I saw your buckets and it reminded me of mine. Before the divorce, I had just built a 38oo sq ft house on the five acres, the cinder blocks were left over and this is all that I have of the endeavor now, lol. I hope to build some benches eventually, but haven't really decided the best location. That is what I like about the blocks, they are portable.

Update:

Here is what I started with at the beginning of this season. I was hoping to get this into a nice pot that I picked out, but due to a recent tragedy that has struck my family, I simply did not have a chance to get it repotted. So, last night, after taking care of some things, I trimmed this one up as a little therapy.

It had some really heavy branches up top and I felt it was too "wide" so I thinned out the top and chased some of the growth in. After I see where it comes out, I may chase it in farther. Also, the leaves are a lot smaller this, which is awesome, I think. What do you think?

Hmmmmm.....I like photo 3 as a front....but I'm hoping that cut hole in the front covers over nicely....and quickly I guess.

So.....what are you thinking for a front?....

Thanks, I am kinda partial to the third or fourth, but will have to look at it more when it fills in. The hole is filling in and should be almost gone this season. I really started closing after I filled it with epoxy putty and cleaned it up.
