When these were in the other pot, I trimmed the inside of the big one.

When arranging these for a good group root spread, it got turned around, so I cleaned everything up a bit.

The spacing is too uniform, when the big one gets bigger, and the small one smaller, maybe it will help.

After.

I really like these plants.
Excellent fun to play with.
Let's see if I can leave em alone now till Spring.

@Eric Group , that black spot in the Amur to the right is a zip tie at an airlayer intended for you. I came across the motherload of mower whacked Amurs too, so I got one for ya! Maybe fall earliest!

Looking good to me. Nice.

I'm playing around with a group of these too. I've killed a few and changed the trees in this a few times but the current ones seem to be ok. My plan is to add 2 trees next year with a taller one in the front middle and a smaller on in the back somewhere. Then maybe transfer to a more shallow and wider pot sometime down the road. Oh and eventually wire some branches too. I dug one last year that grew really well and then I strapped it to a rock this spring and pretty much instantly killed it. Oh well. I might try that again some time because I really like the idea.

A couple weeks ago. I wired the 2 small ones thick branch beginnings down, now the new growth will be good to go.

Couldn't do the big one, had some drying out up top, no good reason. Decided to leave it for now. Which sucks cuz it's branches need wire ASAP.

I broke a branch half off the smallest one and it's alive still!

I collected this one 2 years ago chopped a bunch of branches. This thing grows rapidly and I prune the crap out of it during the growing season and it doesn't miss a beat. It's about 2 foot tall now. I'm going to plant it on a rock slab or root over rock still trying ro figure it out. Wanted to keep it in the nursery pot try to get a littlw bigger trunk on it

Please throw a quote to summon me!
Or anyone!

I think I took the cutting in fall and rooted em indoor.

There is a bit of an out of order progression in page 1.

I put these in what I beleive was rocks and dirt, I know I threw some modelrailroad ballast in there too. Like rough sand.

If I remember correct the were kept inside all winter and put out in spring.

I have a catch all pot inside I root junipers in too.

It was new green growth.

How did you go about taking your cuttings ?
I have a catch all pot inside I root junipers in too.

If there is a mature one in the area there will be quite a few seedlings to collect in the area. I have one collected at 2-3 inches 5 years ago that is now 34 inches tall and getting its first wire soon.

Just saying it is a far faster way to go ;)

My tips are turning purple.

The Tall one is still kinda dry in spots.
I think I gotta keep it tipped to drain better. (Just put rocks under one side!)

The wired ones, including the branch I broke, are still good!

Poppies, poppies will put them to sleep!

Looks normal to me. Funny because I have 5 that all are showing different. The 4 that have received no thinning yet range from semi green to all purple. The one I really thinned a lot and wired is still all green. They are in the same area, receive the same water, fertilizer, same nursery pots... Seems mine want more attention! If they look dry it is most likely they need thinned out more to allow more light in, the ones I allowed to bush out look so dry inside they look like they receive no water or light. They are ok - just the way it goes here with that Juniper type.

semi green to all purple.

The yellowing is going on just above the light top left.

Really exposed.
I've been leaving a bit of stubs too, but I've been trimming too much. IMO!

I can't get over the others being wired and perfect.

But, this pot, side drain only, always held a bit too much water. But the bark really does help it dry out!

I think tipping it may help.
I'll post some pictures if they help any...
But I think I won't know till spring!

The tippy top is good anyway! So if I lose some, I will just let the top go(jin?), or maybe even chose a lower leader, ......

I think they are pretty forgiving in that manner.

Though, the low sacrifice stuff gets a bit lost.......I do have a couple that are competing to win like wireme's spruce.
Visable left in the picture.

If I let those go, the base may fatten better,

Love talking these with ya Grim!

Once established for a couple of years in a pot they seem to be VERY forgiving. I don't know if any of mine will ever be decent Bonsai and honest I am not concerned - they are a nice plant to work with and I see myself having them for a long time ;)

Good news. Not roots.
Bad news. Mites.
Good news. Just enough miracle grow nature's care 3/1 mite and disease control to swab em out!

Why does every spray head on pesticides suck.?

I poured it in the depot bottle yesterday.

Sorce, get a piece of inch thick wood paneling and cut it into strips, then lay one under each side of the mesh pot to act as legs. It should help with the drainage.

I'm always drawn to this Cryptomeria image when working with my Reds:

I'd really like to get one to look like it.

I am able to avoid many things.....only one Japanese Beetle ever.....a few aphids, but the mites love the brick.

I fear going to the ground floor!
Looking for a flat roof!
So I can stay high!
