I know this might be stupid but could I just find like a 3 or 4 ft maple tree in the woods and just start pinching off buds and trimming branches from the top and turn it in to something like that...? Sorry if this is foolish but I see people digging up stumps with new growth coming out the side and use it ...

Drew I just noticed your post by the same name on the maple thread. Yours can be just for maples while this one can be for all species.
I'll add another one to this thread. This maple is by far the first one to color up for me. All the rest are lagging behind by quite a bit. Below is a recent pic of one of my amur maples.
