I think it's practical. .... I don't live in the city so I have more types of tree/bushes then I need all around. And its all free. My dirt is free the plants can be free. I can make pots if need be. It's just having the patients to wait an find the right stuff to use or composting to make your own rich health soil. Or sifting out small rocks to use... blah blah... you get the point I'm sure. An maby it sound silly but that's how it was done in the old day and that's what I injoy. ..
Nobody called you dumb man, but this post sounds a lot like what I described above and it is a recipe for disaster... Not Bonsai. I will not comment on your spelling as I am a typo machine at times! I will just assume the same for you... :)

Don't be so touchy man, but if you come here saying you think you can do this hobby without spending money and talk about making your own soil from compost and rocks... Well... You need the wake up call I am trying to give you. Good luck!

I've seen my own excellent root systems in rocks and dirt. In clay pots.
In Colanders I would expect growth to be even better.

@Anthony albeit in a VERY different climate, has done the same, and a bit different, for years. With good results.

There is more than one way to skin a chimpanzee. But you gotta catch it first!

Of course, I wouldn't switch from oil dry now, but if they stopped making it, I sure would find alternatives to lava/pumice/akadama.

So I cut the tops off of 2 of the trees today left them at about foot and a half and mad sure there were lower branches left on them..

Hope they live and I did an OK job.

They should be good in the ground.
But I'd train em there, and fish em up, for a dig a couple years down.

Maybe trench the roots (time?) Sometime before then. To tighten em up a bit.
