I bought this one as a curved 4-5 yr old whip of a tree, maybe 8 years ago. I briefly planted it in the ground and bent it a bit more before digging it up to move south 6 + years ago. It was wired out for the first time 3 years ago, then planted in the current training pot 2 years ago. This past week, the tree was thinned out and wired again. I think it's time to look for a better pot.

What are you thinking? Maybe a drum style pot?
Yup, either drum style or nanban. I have several to choose from (surprise, surprise:)). The roots will likely need to be reduced over several re-pots, so the next pot won't be the final one, I suspect.

I have a couple little ones I bought from Julian Adams this spring I am hoping to do similar with one and the other as a little cascade pine.

A good start you have.;) Also disagree with "smooth bends" I doo_O. The best and most stunning Yamadori literati sharp bends and healed breaks they have. Better will our trees be if emulate these we do.

@Dav4 you ever think of jinning the top?

Right now, the taper change would look weird, but after that hanger is the only thing growing. .....it may even out yes?

It has been done, yes, good and bad.

I think yours will look good like this because of the swoop left that would visually contain the only green.
Maybe some Shari up the swoop, all the way to the jin, to bring it all together.

I think this could separate it from the "at work" One too. Which, I am amazed is a different one, having 2 nice literate like this is only a dream to some!

There actually is some shari here and there along the trunk, but the bark has swallowed it up. There's some jins up near the top that might get connected by a shari, but just a small one. I've debated the merits of turning this into a single branched, weeping literati style, but I prefer it with the traditional apex.

My issue with this tree is that it seems 2 dimensional. You have several nice east-west bends in the tree, but it also needs either a few north-south bends, or a major twist, so the canopy/tail is moving toward the viewer.

Or, here is another option. Less foliage, SHARP bend. The guy wire should pull the tail down in front of the trunk.

Thanks Jim. The image in the picture is very flat, but the apex is definitely moving toward the viewer, though I wish there was an actual significant twist in the trunk...there's a very subtle one at the first major bend I actually considered moving that dropped branch in front of the trunk. I'll take a side shot at some point. Your second image is the one branch literati I've considered...definitely possible. I would want that branch to thicken up considerably first.

Three pictures from the right side. If you look closely there is a little wiggle right as the roots transition to trunk way down low. The last picture is of the apex from behind taken a few weeks ago, before the tree was wired.

I like it taller. I've seen literati where the trunkline is bent over with the foliage halfway down the tree, but it just seems weird to me.

While looking at the first picture, I would want to bend the apex over to the left above the trunk instead directly above the base. I don't know if it's considered technically "correct" or not.

With literati, I feel like you can get away with more. You could absolutely move the apex to the left here, but my gut would be telling me to move the branches in that direction as well.

Don't you think that you should remove the third branch on the bottom left branch? They all origionate from the same place and should be reduced to just two right?
