great info for me, as I have 2 or 3 of these marked for collection this spring, didn't realize they were extra tricky, good to know. I also use that dyna grow and the protekt so that was great positive reinforcement, that stuff works wonders for all my trees.

Also use a good soil mix-a kanuma mix would be a good choice

I don't have a good source to get it, but I have a good stock of the Napa DE oil dry, and calcined clay oil dry, pumice, pine bark, lavra rock and from bonsai jack im going to mix in some concoction after last years different soil mix experiments. do you have a good source for kanuma by chance?

The long branch here-I think I'm going to go a style similar to Mr Tanak's unique trident maple

Cut heal alright but it's going to get a carving down the road to give it a better appearance

For only one year the branch structure isn't all the bad considering-The tree is in need of wire but that'll come(toes not included)

Quite a project you've got your hands on. I grew my imported J. Beech for 11 years; never making much progress and finally sold it for barely more than I paid. Good luck with it.

I enjoy the unique look and I feel I can get something I will enjoy. Not everyone's cup of tea but I like this brew :)

Strange Brew, but I see something in that tree.
Looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

Whats your plan with this one? have you thought about a slanting tree? having it lean to left side and use that long root as a visual anchor moving right, the root would also need to be carved so it slopes down into the soil. then im not sure i'd keep your current apex. ive been working on one that i shall post later, you'll be able to see what i mean..

I mess with that idea for sure, you going to post here or in your own thread

Here is something I snagged out of a topic I started on a problem I was having with my leaves one year. Paul 63pmp on IBC saw the same problem with his beech and gave me the following advice. Here's an excerpt, and a link to the thread.

it seems that beech have a need for some type of fungal relationship in the soil, do you think that using a strong fungicide may have caused some negative reaction from the tree? I know it may be the only option to rid bad fungus but im wondering if that may have killed the beneficial mycorrhizal along with it.

I do not know the answer to your question @Waltron, if it would have that effect on the tree. I did not use any strong fungicide on my beech so that was not the culprit in that case.

Havn't updated this one but I wired it over the weekend and it's coming along nicely. I incorporated the long branch since it was collected like that. It will need some more work but I'm very happy with it so far. Further cut backs this coming spring and the canopy is getting nice and dense. Come winter I should have a better view of the structure. I have a few other picture as well, I'll post them later of the work I did.

Nice project, I love beech! They have such a special look with their awesome grey/white bark. Big ones in the woods make me think of Game of Thrones!

Yeah! :) they're a special kind of tree and require special attention. But I plan on trying to find a big one this winter when I go looking for spring collection.

I don't think the layer well - mainly because they have slow growth but hey doesn't hurt to try!
