On a serious note . Root grafting may be considered . The first section of trunk up to the bulge is quite straight and may be the best possible solution. Or a layer ? Anyone have any experiences with either ?

Ps kishu plum WTF?

Two years ago Boon was teaching grafting. We were supposed to graft scions from the plum tree onto a trunk that grew up from root suckers. That part didn't bloom. For fun, I tried to graft on some Ume. None took. So, last year, for fun, I grafted on some Kishu. Well, it took. Who knows how long it might live. But, it's good for a laugh!

Pines don't air layer very well. Not going to say it can't be done...

Root grafting a whole circle of roots? Well, that's quite ambitious, it might or might not work, and even if it did, would the end result look any better than what's there now? And it would be a lot of bother for, well I'll just say it: a run of the mill JBP. If it were some fantastic yamadori, yes, it would be worth it. But, this tree?

If the tree were something like this:

image.jpeg

I'd say, yes, it's worth it! (I've got two or three grafts setting on it now, and I'm going to add two or three more this spring).

Now, I'm not trying to be elitist, rather, I'm being realistic.

Spend your time, money, and efforts where you will get a decent return. Sure, learn on less valuable stock, but doing a whole series of root grafts (you would have to place at least 5, and more likely 7 or more for it to look decent) on this tree is crazy. Far easier to just start with better (less flawed) stock.

I agree either I will air layer it , or sell it no biggie. I did style aND cleaned this JBP yesterday will most likely keep it . I have 2 other nice ones that are ready to be styled. Will work on getting better trunks for the next few years. I come accross alot of good material , sometimes you don't get exactly what you want but I'm having fun! Nice trunk by the way Adair !

I do like to barter ..would rather barter than deal with cash. I have some deer hides I'm willing to part with

I missed this....when I was selling leather to top designers, like the ones who work with Polo, I'm not trying to be elitist either, but I am name dropping, lol, that's for people that doubt me, not y'all!....
Anyway we did classic cars too....
And I talked to this dude about using his deer hides to put in his car....pretty dope project!

Anyway...I hate talking bout a tree I can't see... So...20160109_121654~2.jpg

I never even looked at any more than the trunk here, didn't even look at the first branch, haven't really yet.

I do have an established jin for a nice pine....I'm Probly way too excited....
But you know....time/$........

I think I might get out my Dremel and see what happens.

View attachment 91525
Dremel , get a chainsaw for that sucker ! Lol jk
Who knows could turn out to be really nice in the end ...if all else fails you can carve the top flat on the bulge and put a mini toy car there .. Now that's optimism at its best ...it's not a flaw just a place to park my car :p

I would make it a cascade or semicascade. The bulge will tell a different story.

Cuz I'm out there right now...

You could pin those long roots up as if you were grafting them....
Pot this thing at the wide spot, and make those roots look as if they ARE coming from the nice flare spot....

Hell...they may even take!

Mega Sorce Fake!

It'll work.

Nothing is ever gonna fix the fact that that straight section looks like the bonsai trunk version of a crackhead.

Or glue a shitload of bark around that crackhead....

When going for thick....fat.....big trunks....
What sense does it make to make it thinner?

Let me find my drone bro!
