Thanks Gene! Really nice to hear coming from you. Maybe a little undeserved but nice to hear. Even if I had the ugliest trees of all time I don't think I could stop tinkering. I would'nt call it a hobby more of an obsession for me.

I would tell myself to let it grow- save that branch. Don't cut it back. Find a way to use it. Stop cutting everything.
If you want to move that branch or shorten it just wire it into place.
Study more trees. Visit more places.
When you see a tree you love buy it now. Do not wait. It will be "the one that got away- forever"

Bonsai related... "Visit Japan now. Because next year you start having kids and there goes the next 30 years and all your money" (This sounds wrong. I love my kids but they took priority over all else while they were growing up.)

I had been doing bonsai for 8 years when I turned 30. 43 now, and here is a bit of what I'd do differently; spanned over several posts:

1. Chop lower! Each of these "before" photos was taken when I was 30. "After" photos are recent. You can probably see what I mean when you see 13 years of time side by side.

2. Don't waste time on species that don't horticulturally comply with our bonsai techniques; like ERC and willow:

Keep good trunks:

Get rid of bad trunks, don't waste time on them. Even with good species, they require a ton of time.

Wire Everything.
Don't waste time on bad material.
Do what needs to be done (you know you need to cut off that branch, do that chop lower, wire that bend into that thick branch....) this year, instead of hating that branch, too tall no taper trunk, too straight thick branch for another year, and then doing it. Wasting years waiting for things to improve on their own is wasted time!!!
