I have always wanted a cherry tree.
Here is my first one, I aim to have more, but it's a start. This one is gearing up to flower and leaf out as well. This is a type that will flower more than once a year, sometimes in fall. It flowered this past winter oddly. Since it flowered in winter I didn't expect another spring bloom, it's not going to be heavy bloom, but exciting anyway.

Ahh,that is the one I wanted to see its own thread:)
I enjoy flowering trees, but don't really have the means to overwinter properly.
This is really a unique tree,a real treasure if you ask me.

I too love cherries. Do you know what cultivar this is? My Kojo No Mai and Akebono cuttings and weeping landscape cherries are just aching to blossom. Can't wait.

And BTW I do know the pot is too large for the tree. I'm hoping that it'll help the development. At some point, I'd like to get a larger cherry for this pot if this twin does not grow into it. But developed cherry trees are something I've not been able to find.

Nice one! If that is a Prunus ‘Jugatsu-zakura’ it can bloom throughout Winter roughly November - January. It varies as that is the bloom season for those in Japan and I am not certain how those months relate to ours. It should be interesting to record and compare a few years of notes as it gets established :) I am looking into a couple of varieties to "test" in the back that had problems. I expect all to be OK. If you are wanting another prolific bloomer look into Snowdrift Crabapples.

I'm getting more and more interested in flowering trees all round.

I am as well. Will be receiving Apricot, pear, and Plums to play with soon. I am hoping to develop displays over the next several years that have them mixed in on benches with various colors at various times. I am a non glazed pot fan so things used to always have a tendency to look mostly green most of the time - time to diversify at our house

i believe this type can actually bloom twice, first in autumn to winter and again in spring. Jugatsu means october by the way.
Nice tree with good potential you have

Love the shape and color of the pot. The blooms will pop next to it. I so get your choosing a larger pot to help with development. Looking forward to seeing where you take this. I see great potential.

Looked this cultivar up, sounds like it may be the same as (or at least closely related to) what is commonly sold as Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis' which is known to flower both in the fall and the spring. I've got a couple in the grow bed but they aren't developed enough to bloom regularly either season.

Please post photos when the flowers are open...do you know if they are white or pink?

Judy,

I like your cherry tree. Looks like you did some drastic pruning - when did you do it? Any other recommendations/tips for drastic pruning of cherries?

Thank you,

Augustine

@ coh -it was blooming when I got it, here is a photo. Yes it is basically the same cultivar from what I can find as Autumnalis. @augustine , I pruned it in late winter, and yes it was some hard pruning, but the plant is super happy right now.

Hi Judy,
Your Cherry looks like its recovering from hard pruning better than my Kojo-no-mai! Im wishing I hadnt been so hard on it now!
I pruned it last summer- the books say summer prune to avoid Silver leaf disease here in UK -not sure if its a problem for you in USA?...
I know the pot is too big but I felt it needed space to recover after being butchered...
Im having problems attaching and formatting this so hope it sends ok?!
Alex
