Awake and mating. . . . In my basement fulltime. Uh huh inside. . . This is why I use Chem ferts. I can push growth like crazy and have a 10 mo. growing season depending on species. I only had these guys outside for about 2 months this winter. Now I won't do it for their entire life but the first couple years you can almost get ground growing speed with container quality bark. . .

They have a surgical procedure for that
now. Just in case you are interested.

I had an idea! :)

IMG_0177.JPG

Well several in fact.

The 1st one (a good one) was to use my wife's I-pad to shoot the selfie.
On my last entry in the contest @ColinFraser made the constructive criticism that my picture wasn't a selfie. To address the problem and from now on I'll do those selfie's entries using a devise that actually has a selfie mode and not my regular camera like I tried before, that should make my life easier ;)

The second idea (may be not a so good one) was to plant in the ground the elm I collected last Thanksgiving.
I though it will be good for it's roots but now I'm pretty sure it would have do the same nice job at budding back in a colander and it would have been easier to manage it for me.

The good thing is that the tree is obviously alive :) so no harm no foul.
The bad thing is that I loose one year before starting working on it as I will most certainly pot it next year.
The second very bad thing being the rabbit!
I didn't see that coming, that the rabbits will eat my tree's buds if it was in the ground

Hence the 3rd idea :)

Of entering my elm in a anti-rabbit protection program. :D

We have the 2 versions: casual or fully dressed for the sun.

Okey now I'm not kidding anymore.

My anti-rabbit device worked well - I saw the disappointed rabbit in the yard this morning - and the tree looked fine this evening after its first day in it's tank.
At least it looks fine if you make abstraction of the colony of slug babies it was covered off.

I removed at least 50 of the little fuckers with a tweezers and my rabbit set-up is not to blame for them because actually some damage was already done before I installed it but I didn't make the distinction between that and the rabbit's damage.
My bad.
Now that I saw them it's obvious.
On the pictures I pointed in black the babies slugs (after I removed the 47 something others), in blue the rabbit pruning and in red the slug's damages.
As you guys know the drill I didn't point on the last picture but you can see that it's a masterpiece of rabbit's pruning :confused::confused:

So my question is: should I transplant the tree asap in a pot?
When I planted it I did a neat rectangular hole which I filled with the soil I use in my training pot so basically the tree is potted in a pot but in the ground hence I could do a slip re-pot.
It seems to me that it can't be more stressful and bad for the tree than this double treats in the ground.
What do you guys think about?

Well the problem isn't the rabbit anymore but the slugs. I removed all those I saw but I guess more are coming and I supposed it will end-up killing the tree if they keep eating it's leaves.

You can spread 8822 fines around the base....

No more slugs!
