Hi All,

I was walking at the Duke Gardens today in North Carolina and came across a weeping japanese maple. I have never seen this form before as it was completely natural and unstyled. It was called Acer palmatum 'Ryusen'. Does anyone have any experience with this, either in bonsai or gardening?

Name rings a bell, think I may have seen one or two of them before.

Duke gardens, huh? May take a tour of the campus sometime.

Nice form! I think I see seedlings;) (not that they would be "Ryusen").

Lovely tree...gets amazing fall color that is splendid! Had one in the landscape a few years. Until that arctic cold that hit our area a few years back. Killed the top dead but a good foot from the ground. Now I'm playing with it...in a bulb pot. Training it back up. I let it weep past the bottom of the pot. Sitting it on a ledge near our rock stairs in the back patio area. Looks stunning...

This cultivar used to be very rare in Europe, but I bought a small on for a small price last year -smthg like £14.95, about €20, in Woking, England at a supermarket (Morrison's).

It's "copyrighted", that means that you are not allowed to reproduce it without buying a licence. I can understand that: it's often hard for professionals to make a living.

But what can you do when a branch air-layers itself and you don't intend to make profit from the clone?...

It's now in a 40 cm tall pot (about 15.75 inches: booh hoo, why don't you USonians use the metric system like the rest of the civilized world?....)

Here's a picture I took this evening:
