I posted an American Larch for sale and got some interesting and learned responses. My $80 price drew responses like, "I'd never pay that much," or something like, "My $80 larch is better than yours." So this is the "Show Us your $80 Larch Contest." By the way, no one asked me why I thought the tree was worth $80. This tree has radial roots an interesting base, good trunk movement as well as radial branch placement and good order. I spent about 15 minutes wiring it last night. compare it to the pic in the sales forum and you will see that very little was pruned in the styling.

Here's mine:

This one was 3€ some 8 years ago. Grown in pot, wasn't satisfied with it...chopped down last spring... ok now it's 1,50€...
But I'll keep it, grow some branches, esp. the first left, improve the canopy and show it when it's 80€ worthy...2016_0422_10014700.jpg

I am from the great white north, so we use the Canadian peso. I think of what I could buy locally for $80, and it would be a whole lot more tree. I imagine any of the people in the northern states would laugh at paying for a larch. That said, it is a cute tree.

Akadama in Japan its common and cheap. Does that mean $25 for a 14 liter bag here in the USA is a bad price? I don't know. What I do know is basing a purchase on the opinion of the guy in Japan means I'll never buy a bag of akadama here in the USA.
Same goes for you. Price there does not equal price here. It sucks for us. Its great for you. But in the context of the OP's question, your opinion has little relevance, and you are just gloating. :D

Hey, I like this thread! Put up or shut up. Let's see what everyone has.

I don't have any $80 larches, so I'll just be waiting to see what others post.

People don't know how hard it is to find larch with a good number of branches down low. They are in a race to the sky and drop those low branches fairly fast. We had someone selling trees just like this at our club auction last fall. They were going for $70. I was shocked since I get them for the cost of a tank of gas. I need to gather and sell at the local club, point being, they are worth what they go for, $70 wasn't crazy for people at the auction.

I don't have any that small. I saw one last year for $400.00 at a show that I wouldn't even consider digging up.
But I'll play. I dug more up yesterday let me get pictures today. The reason I asked on your other thread if people will pay $70.00 for your tamarack is because I'll be selling some too. If they will pay what you ask then I'm sitting on a gold mine.
I'll let these go for $80.00. To give you an idea on size that colander is 12" across. It has only had rootwork done once. But the bark in combination with some taper and low branching makes them 20160424_103511.jpg 20160417_150750.jpg a good start.

You're trying to compare trees just collected and put into colanders, with a styled tree that was collected several years ago, has had root work and pruning over several years, and now wiring.

Mike, those trees might have great futures, but I wouldn't pay $80 right now for any of them. Let them establish for a year or two, then they might be worth that or more. That doesn't mean you won't find someone to pay that for them right now, but I wouldn't.

If I started this.....

And then sit back and just watch it play out.....
Am I going to turn into Smoke!?
________

I got one from Mike in the mail last spring...
I let it get missed and sit boxed for like 4-5 days.....
If that didn't happen, I'm quite sure it would have lived.

That said...
When I can accept the generous free from the beginning, free replacement offer, I would like it to be a bit more established so I know it will surely make it!

But for driving em down the mitten a bit, the collected year, $80 Seems a good place to be...

Though with the Vacuum exposure upping the market....a couple years into established and styled could pay $$$....
Even crated in the mail.

Whoever said it, wasn't lying....
We'll see the Larch bubble....
Or we're seeing it....

@twisted trees
That tree looks nicer now...
I hope I didn't digitally disturb you.
I guess I am still a little irked over the non-windswept windswept.

Was it 15? Years of good feedback on E-bay?
*With the information we have so far....*

This could be 15years of selling ok trees as things they aren't, to people who don't know what they are doing, and never have anything bad to say because you didn't rob them, because you shipped the product....

But that has absolutely nothing to do with GOOD bonsai!

Forgive me if I am a little too squirrelly...

I'm just looking out for my NUTS!
You included! (but you gotta post more!)
;);)

P.S.
For the record...of anyone wants to see my $80 Larch....you gotta ask Mike to post it....and it may even still be in a ditch somewhere!

How hard is it to grow or regrow branches on a larch? I'd be willing it okay $80 for something with good trunk size like the ones Mike collected IF I could grow be branches from the trunk. Tilted Trees's larch is nice, but it seems a bit skinny. I understand that working the roots and getting the branch placement sorted out take work and time.

And time is money.

I guess what I'm saying is, would it be faster to regrow branches on a fat trunk or to use sacrifice branches to fatten a skinny trunk with good branch placement?

I am not sure the OP's tree is worth $80 but I collect Larch so I am biased. I am sure it would be worth $80 to some. Growing and selling bonsai does not seem to be the most profitable business. You don't see alot of people getting rich selling these trees. Think about the total time invested into this tree for the seller and it doesnt seem so expensive. It may not be your our my idea of an $80 tree but I bet those that are willing to pay that for it on Ebay are excited about it.

This is a Yamadori I purchased a year ago. A bit more than 80 USD - I think it was 90 euro. Photo is a year old, it has grown nicely. Haven't done much with it yet, I nowadays try to wait a year after purchasing it before doing anything.

I dont own any larches, mainly because I cant find any I like enough to buy yet. I was at MABS last weekend. PFM Bonsai had some that had 3/4 inch - 1 inch trunks going for $40 and some twin trunks in pots selling for $70-$90. They sold almost all they had. There was a collected larch at NEBG last year with nice old bark that they were selling for $75. It wasnt a bad tree and I should have bought it.

Sorry but your tree isnt worth $80 to me. Maybe to someone else but not to me.

It's damned tricky because they don't backbud.

So it's damned near impossible to regrow any branches anywhere there isn't a bud.
