Thanks Vance. I will stew on it for a while.

I don't think the roots were damaged. The whole pot was wrapped in plastic and taped so was being held together. It was only as I was unpacking the tree that things started to fall apart.

Here's a mugo I've had for a couple of years. Got it out of a dumpster. There was a lot of die back that kept happening, but I hope it's done with its dying now. There's only those two branches left and they are doing well. I dont know if anything can be done with what is remaining after all that die back.20160616_105630.jpg 20160616_105547.jpg

I think the tree has some great possibilities if the tree survives and prospers. It looks good but there could be the temptation to do something more putting a fatal demand on existing resources. Let the tree rest and recover for at least a growing season. What kind of container have you put this guy into?

It's just been in that Styrofoam box ever since I brought it home. I made lots drainage holes in the bottom.

The uprights are listed as Mops? That is interesting, or incorrect. Most Mops are very bushy unless they are grafted onto a tall trunk like a Scotts Pine, to render a tall pom pom toped tree you sometimes see with Blue Spruce.

Went and had a look at the tall mugos again and they do look grafted. All of them had an old branch wound and a bulge.

Buy one and tell her you just dug it up. I come home with trees all of the time. After a while my wife doesn't even ask where it came from anymore.

I was doing that then she told me if she see another new tree she's moving out. Lol well my daughter bought a dwarf snow rose yesterday. It wasn't me :).

Before:
IMAG2088.jpg
IMAG2087.jpg During: pleasantly surprised by the single trunk hiding beneath the soil.

And after the attack: into a stainless steel fryer basket, plenty of room to grow.
I ended up basically bare rooting it, though that wasn't my original intention. By the time I dug to to base of the tree, I was 4/5 of the way there, so, I just got all the old soil out. No hose spray, just a root hook. You can see the new growth very low in the branches, I am hoping for more backbudding like that on the other two branches. Then I can lop off the tall ones and begin building a super tiny "Mame Mugo".

Did you read any of my posts on Mugo Pine especially those things about repotting? If so why did you bare root the tree?

I have yes.
I know it is a bad idea.
I was trying to see the nebari, if it hadn't at all..
Due to way the roots were circled around the tree, as I moved the root hook around, damn near all the original soil came out.

I'm waiting till mid July to remove some large branches from my other Mugo, the one I've had for a couple years. Taking it very slow with that one. One insult per year, at most.

Give your Daughter the money to go get you a few of them for Father's Day ;)
