I would argue that they are. No, they do not have a brain, but they can do some pretty amazing things that scientists are just starting to discover.

One example, trees can't talk or communicate with sound, but they did evolve to chemically communicate with other trees. When a tree is being attacked by an insect, it releases chemicals in the air that can warn other trees. Pretty cool stuff!!! :)

I thought you were gonna say the one on plants.

They are smarter than we care to give them credit for.

Smarter than a 5th grader?
Don't tell me you and Andrew have been tricked by some wily tree before.

So quick update on the tree everyone. The weather finally is starting to get warmer here (15 c yesterday) and so I had a go at this guy. I very lightly combed out the sides and bottom 1/3 of the rootball. This tree was soo rootbound it's not even funny. The nursery mix it's in was very wet and there was clear signs of root rot as well as healthy roots.

I didn't take any pictures of the repot itself but here is the tree after I repotted it up about two container sizes and backfilled all around it with Qualisorb. The tree is already greening up quite a bit and I have been misting the tree a couple times a day to help with transpiration.

Yeah I also wasn't very optimistic at first but I'm doing the best I can to stay out of its way and just let it recover. From here I have a long process of getting it to backup and to push growth back inside. I am also kicking around the idea of grafting blauuw juniper to it at a later date. For now I'm just leaving it alone

In fact your post gives me a lot of hope for one of my own juniper (a big one too I got for free last labor day as it was pulled out by landscapers) and which looks very yellow/brown but will may be kick back!

The 'let it recover part' of your plan sounds like an awesome idea to me :)

(and now a little spike from a Habs fan: anyway if you are a Leafs fan you are use to cheer for almost dead bodies :D)

Lmao well hopefully your juni is able to recover like mine did. I have found that around here our weather tends to be very damp and heavy organic soils are not my friend at all.

Also, not a leafs fan...but I am a reformed Sens fan... I have been a blackhawks fan for a couple of years now though ;)

Thanks! Me too! (the good thing is that I got 3 more when the landscapers were doing there job. The others look perfectly green, healthy and growing :)

I have been a blackhawks fan for a couple of years now though ;)

A much wiser option if you want a parade I may say :)
I always like them (even if there aren't my team) and now that I live in Chicago suburbs it's even easier.
Great game yesterday btw :)

Good plan. Just water and feed it this year and see what next year brings.

Just an update on this thread for those that are interested. This juniper has exploded with new growth this year and has put on a significant amount of new growth. Definitely thinking that it will be ready to be cut back hard next year as I am getting backbudding everywhere on this guy

Good to see it looking far more healthy! It is actually a good time right now to do some thinning off interior growth and weak growth. ;)

Yeah it seems to be doing really well. I'll spend sometime Friday thinning out the foliage like you're recommending.
