I don't see many Ginko showing around here. Went to a bonsai enthusiast that happens to have a small home business selling Bonsai and stuff and saw this nice Ginko tree. Think he said about 40 or 50 yrs old. hollow trunk too!

Ask how much and he did not want to let it go, so 2k was the price lol.

Anyone here have some nice Ginko? Beides Trident, Elm and Oak; I would like to have a Ginko one day. Such nice leaves...

Ah yes, I remember that thread. Very nice progression.

You mentioned 4 lived. What happened to the other 3?

Check with New England Bonsai, they had a few ranging from pre-bonsai to a few that were further along the last time I was up that way. If the don't have any on their website, contact them directly.

Thanks for the heads up whfarro. I do check on them periodically.

Maybe not now, but one day.... I will have a ginko of my own.

Speaking of, how forgiving are they to a newbie? Are they built like elms?

I've been developing this "chi-chi" ginkgo since 2009. Matt Ouwinga is confident that it probably started as an air layer in Japan. Apparently a common way of producing ginkgo stock.

Here is a forest pic from 2014 and it has grown some since then. Just occasional trim, minor wire, fert and water.

Ginkgo Forest 2014.jpg

By the way another place to obtain ginkgos is at a NC place for maples and ginkgo called Mr. Ginkgo. Their trees are very good stock and they have dozens of variety. One caution is that they are grafted, but the 2 I have the grafts are almost unnoticeable. https://www.mrginkgo.com/index.html

Forgive all the crap in the background, bad photos, messy yard.

One is in a 12 inch pond basket, trunk is about 3 inches in diameter. This was a volunteer growing in the back yard of someone who had a female ginkgo, It was about 15 feet tall and was cut and dug late winter 3 years previous. I counted rings, it is over 30 years old. It will still take a long time to make this a natural looking bonsai. Got some serious carving ahead of me. I'm thinking toward a ''flame style''. ONly 4 buds popped on the old trunk, but got buds on 3 sides, so that can be made to work. It needs to go into a larger grow out pot. Want the roots to spread, so I can get more vigorous branch growth.

Second is a cutting grown plant of 'Chi Chi Icho' the clone famous for forming those strange protuberances when over 30 or so years old. It is a young plant in a 15 x 15 x 5 inch Anderson flat. Trunk is only about one inch in diameter, and tree is nearly 3 feet tall. It has some serious growing to do before a bonsai pot. Maybe 5 more years in the Anderson flat.

Here is my contribution. I let it grow and get healthy this year so it has a lot of extension. On the blog you can see the foliage be tighter in years past. It's in a Sara Rayner pot that I love. It has also done a lot better for me in a deeper pot, not sure what others have experienced.
