Following are a series of photos of some trees I have repotted so far this summer. This is not all neither will it be.

This is one of the 3.5 gal. Mugos from last summer I decided to do something with.

Summer Repot #3.

It' pretty obvious that there is nothing here that is of masterpiece caliber, this is just simply posting examples of what I have been doing for the last couple of weeks so you can see I do what I say I do. My preferred time to do Shimps, Mugo and Scots are all in the summer.

Vance do you repot all your shimps in the summer? I have some I want to separate. They have multiple trunks that I have buried for several years. I know at least one of them has roots emerging from all trunks.

Jep, that's what he said... Actually I do the same with all Juniper, Pines, and this year Spruce as well. Kind of nice as it gives you some extra fiddling time in Summer when everything else doesn't like it.

I do mine in the summer out of convenience and because I can. If you are looking to divide a tree you might want to consult with someone who has done this in your area though I don't see it being a problem from the way you have described it.

Talk to me about spruce repotting...

My BHS is swollen for next year and sitting pretty.....

With 2 more coming my way....

I can sacrifice this current one!

I need to wire it and lose some branches.

Not to sidejack this thread but do you also do most conifer collecting in the summer as well then?

I collect anytime but winter if I have the time. I've only lost 2 trees in 3 years. This is the first year I haven't collected in summer only because I've been quite busy.

Wha percentage of soil are you removing? What percentage of roots are you removing?
Almost 100% of the soil and any dead roots, in this case about 50%. Very tiny ants but an entire nest in this tree and a couple of others. This has been the year of ant infestations every where.

This Shimpaku, the one in the red pot and a JBP, to be shown latter. Actually it was the Black Pine that alerted me to the problem. I noticed that the shoots had extended thjen did not open while every thing else left it in their tracks. I figured there had to be something wrong with the roots. I didn't want to lose it so I pulled it from the pot and found the infestation. I immediately washed the roots and put it in clean soil. Within a couple of days I thought I saw some new buds coming. A couple of days latter it was a definite explosion of new shoots and the tree is cooking again.

Looks like the multi trunk Shimp is ready for some wiring. Will you be working on this tree next year. I look forward to see what you do with it.

I will probably start fooling around with it this year. I have found that Shimps can take that treatment as well at the same time. I will probably wait a week or two. This is one of the Shimps that had the ants.

Here are a couple of photos of the JBP I mentioned earlier of having to have basically a bare root. Ten days ago. Notice how the new candles had stopped elongating and appeared to be drying out. It was at this point I discovered the tree was infested with very small ants and an entire nest. I dealt with the problem and now you can see the tree is responding with new growth. I grew this tree from seed about 20 years ago.

Trees always seem to enter dormancy at temperature peaks in the summer--a bit risky to do summer repots here as heat can easily crisp up or stress a tree. I'm glad to know its feasible though. Spring is often really busy for me and hard to get at the trees done at one go whereas summer I'm more free.
