Hi All,

A local nursery had a 50% off sale so I grabbed some deals. All told for less than $200.

Robinia pseudoacacia 'twisty baby aka black lotus. Amazing movement on this guy.

Jacquieline Hillier elm. A bit of a handlebar at the base with two of the branches, but there is a lot to work with. Plus, you can't beat $20.

Crategus monogyna inermis compata aka thornless compact hawthorn. There is actually some movement to the trunk but I grabbed a picture of the wrong side.

Chaenomeles speciosa contorta aka contorted flowering quince. I think this will make a nice clump style with the natural contorted movement of the branches.

Haha. They had some really big Seiju elms also, but I didn't think I could fit a 20 foot tree in the back of my Honda =P

Four nice trees for a reasonable price. What a shopper!

Wouldn't this be the wrong season to trunk chop like that? It's still 90 degrees outside.

Technically not "best practices" calendar wise, but it is fall and you should be fine with a healthy elm. Maybe consider extra protection in winter for the wound and some potential dieback from your 'chop' point. I chopped 2 nursery trees last September at the nursery, a maple and an elm, and both are doing well. (Live in Memphis and don't recall the precise date)

Good to know. I might just keep my eye on them and see if they are still around at the end of the month.

20 foot tall Seiju elms?! Holy smokes!
That's what I was thinking!
I love the fall sales. I roll in with my little hatchback pick out a 15ft tall tree, carry it to my car and pull out the saw! I get some crazy looks leaving 12ft of a tree behind In the parking lot. Hahaha

You guys are really tempting me to go back.... If for no other reason than just the story! I'm not sure what my wife will say though if I tell her I spent a few hundred dollars on a stump. =)

If I lived where you do I would get the whole thing home somehow. And in the spring start an air layer factory.

I spent about 30 minutes staring at it trying to figure out how I could make that happen.
Does Home Depot or Lowes rent their pickups in your area for $20 for 75 minutes? Its implied you're purchasing from them, but they don't actually check on it.

Yeah, there is a UHaul just down the street from me also. I used it to transport a couple apple trees.
