Well after much deliberation, I went back to the nursery and decided to buy a large chinese elm yatsubusu. It is probably 8 feet tall but it is horizontally oriented.

It had grown through the bottom of the pot at the nursery so we had to dig it up. I dug a small hole and mulched it in place when I got home as I was worried about out of season 'transplanting.' I also cut some of the long shoots to reduce transpiration.

If it looks good come spring, I will probably air layer above the first bigger branch and then transplant the trunk and native base the following year to a box with bonsai soil. There are so many decent sized branches >1" that I think I have enough to make a decent sized forest in the future from the top!
