Today was the Fresno Bonsai Annual Swapmeet. The ninth!

I got there early because I had special visitors coming to the compound from Southern California. They left at 6 AM and got to my place around 10:30.

At the yard sale early I found this trident sitting on the ground. It looked pretty nice but I had no idea who it belonged to. I asked around and no one knew. I ran into Steve DaSilva, guy who I got many field grown tridents from. He said it was his. I asked him that he did not have any big ones like this around the field. He said it was in a box and that the box fell apart when he tried to put it into his vehicle for the yard sale. I asked him what it was going for? He said you want that ole thing? Just take it, I don't want it.

I took off the plastic and the paper and all was good. It was bare root and moist in the grape picking paper. The ball was already pretty flat. On hand for the unveiling was owner of Bonsainut Greg Peterson, Ian Burke (IanB ) and Si Nguyen.

Here they are at the swapmeet. Si holding the oak he bought, Greg on the left with Itoigawa he bought, and Ian on the right.

I had to cut back some roots to get it into a training pot, since it was bareroot and I had to plant it today.

After is was potted and watered in. Poor thing will get a winter cut tomorrow.

Nice tree material...post some photos, if possible and available, after the winter haircut. I'm interested in seeing the progress of this excellent find.

You prune back tridents at this time of year? I've been told that it increases the risk of infection, or at least thats what is parroted around here.

I cant believe that someone would look at that and not see the potential. Great rough stock.

Thank You. Who said anything about not seeing the potential? To a ground/field grower this is just another lousy maple to prune next year...

Bout the same risk of any infection summer or winter here. I prune anytime of year. I don't believe in "I've read" or "I've been told". Just do it and see what your growing conditions can take. My trees are in training year round and receive training even in the dead of winter. They don't do anything till spring but with over 70 tridents I don't have time to wait till the buds swell.....I would be SOL.

They were leaving my place and making the long trek to see the nursery of Ed Clark. I am sure he will make purchases there. He wanted a Cal juniper that was really tugging at him but did not pull the trigger. I think he wanted to be ready for Ed Clark.

Si did give me half on a great deal I made him on the foemina forest. I paid 250.00 for the pot and it has seventeen trees in it that I have had over 33 years. I told him he could have the whole thing for 200.00. He is going to come back with a trailer later. Maybe you should tell him you want to come.

I'll be writing my report of their visit to the compound soon.

I'm not jealous, not jealous at all... ONLY because it wouldn't survive here anyway!

Thanks for letting me know Smoke.
It is a steal, Si! :) I think Si should take a good care of it, because it will be one of the pieces in California bonsai history!! Thanks for offering, Smoke, but I am having more than enough to care for at this time.

Thanks for the response. Youre right, its probably climate dependent and something one can only learn through trial and error..

I have a couple trident projects going on, maybe I will work on them Monday or Tuesday and start a thread.

Started here with the tree on the table.
DSC_00010001.JPG

Most of the work was determining what to keep. when the choice is made , everything else is pruned off.

DSC_00100010.JPG DSC_00110011.JPG

There were four branches all in a row. It came down to the last two on the right and the last one won due to having the closest bud to the trunk. Extremely important.
DSC_00120012.JPG

This top is a mess, lots of heavy growth due to being such an apical plant.

DSC_00250025.JPG

My solution is to always cut it off and deal with new growth to build a better apex. Smooth it out with a sharp knife and seal with paste. A note about paste. Ed Clark showed a me a couple plants at the swapmeet that he bought back from a previous customer. he bought them back because it was an arakawa maple and he wanted the cutting material. What he showed me was wounds that had been covered over with brown clay type paste. They made a large bump on the trunk where branches had been pruned off. I didn't get a pic but will next weekend when I go and wire a fifty pines. he said it was from the hormones they put in the paste. him and I both use only the green goo in a toothpaste tube. So much better than the putty for me. Anyone seen this before, picture?

The tree all wired up and ready for a nap till spring. That, my friends is a fugly trunk.

For the right kind of tree and to obtain the right kind of effect, that cut paste that you mentioned might have a "good or desirable" application... but I agree, on this tree it would likely have been a better outcome if it had not been used... Personally, I like fugly; I'm going to have to hunt down some of that there 'ore-moan paste... or make some if I can't find it... hormone mixed in silicone might work.
