Hello,

I want to start a thread to follow some Japanese Maples that I recently received from @Jphipps

Whether this thread will last years and showcase beautiful trees in the future (or simply publicize their cruel and unesseccary death by the hands of the winter or myself) is a great unknown. However I would like to keep track somewhere.

I also thought it would be a good place to ask for advice when needed or if Im doing something stupid for others to let me know! I am slowly learning..

The trees will sit in this unheated room tonight/tomorrow as it's supposed to be about 15°F tomorrow. Saturday they will be going out into an unheated storage unit that should be a little colder.

Not cheap potting soil this time!

Quick update:

Got the maples moved into an unheated storage unit that is attached to my apartment. I feel as though the temperature out there should be fairly protected from extreme winter highs or lows but will keep a close eye on it. I thought I'd also include a picture of each tree which will for now be identified in numerical order as they are posted.

2, could make for exposed roots or ROR:

4, very much like the movement in the lower trunk:

5, could make for nice raft or windswept:

7, I believe this is the largest trunk.

@Eric Group
I just hope to see some surviving tress after this winter! I agree #4 has "it" for me as well.

@j evans
Thanks! I can do that waiting just have to figure out the growing part...

@Potawatomi13
I've been watching the moisture carefully but this is my first venture into several different areas. Colanders, closer to bonsai soil mix, cold storage, etc. So I've got a lot to figure out at once..

There is a forum for maples.
This thread should be there.
Ohioisonfire is a "sapling".

Now that he's heard the lesson, the moderators can perhaps move his message to the right sub-forum so we can follow the evolution of his little ones in the right place ;)

And won't forget to water them since they're indoors.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Trees are going in the burn pile tonight and I'll see you guys in two years... I'll have time to sit and think about what I did wrong.

On a real note. can't believe how fast these are drying out. First experience with a fast draining mix, gotta say it's nice but I can't imagine how much I'm gonna be watering this summer..

Hold on, why a burn pile? How did you find out something had gone wrong in just a week? The trees are dormant, just wait for spring.

Just a misunderstanding folks. Simply making a joke in regards to @j evans jokingly saying I'd be on probation for posting in the wrong sub-forum! I am not a quitter!

That's the unfortunate thing about communicating In a written format online, it's very easy for things to come out the wrong way..

The trees are fine! I didn't think I'd come back to these kind of replies.

Well.......................I don't know. That is for the powers to be to decide. I had an offense when I said "plain old maple".
