very nice, there are not many people that can or want to make a carob bonsai. I have made some topics a while back showing no interest. Anyone i really like these and we have loads and loads of carob trees here, i wanted to ask you whether you have ever tried to do airlayering on a carob?

See the 112th issue of Bonsai Focus published in 2007 for a decent article on Carob trees.

Goztek, I know that it is not possible to propagate carob from cutting. So probably it is to difficult to make airlayering. I try one but can’t succeed, because tree was far from my house, period was long so I can’t give water continuously.

İt’s very easy to germinate from seeds. You can germinate to many. Pour hot water on the seeds keep them in water, second day pour hot water on them again. Keep seeds in cold water 1 or 2 more days, then ready to sow. Germination will be in 2 weeks.

(Carob is not deciduous, but I can't find evergreens. Need to move?)

I am very happy to see this! Carob is a species that I wondered about as they do well in the Southwest United States. Awesome!

10 years later, does anyone have any experience with Carob as a bonsai?

I have 8 seedlings. My intention is to put 4 of them in colanders for the (brief) heat of Summer.

Tho many people insist the climate here on the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island is "Mediterranean" I don't think it will be happy outside.

Nice trees look much like oaks. Strange to see "Anonymous" user categorized as "banned".

I'm going to keep posting in this 12 year old thread.

I repotted my carob seedlings from potting soil to pure diotomaceous gravel. I also cut off the tap root up to three or four forka of feeder roots. They were not thriving and had hardly put on any growth since I brought them outside a month or so ago. I don't know if it was the stress of my intervention or if it was truly welcomed but in the week since I drastically changed their substrate and roots they've all put on new buds. We are in the middle of an over thirty Celsius and sometimes over forty Celsius heat wave here.

I don't have any experience making carob into bonsai yet, but I planted about 30 seeds back in March 2021. They're growing fantastic (zone 8b). There are some beautiful 70 or 80-year old carobs in the city parks here in Sunnyvale CA. Unfortunately I can't wait that long to see them reach fruitrition.
