Thanks Giga, that's pretty nice and a little different than any plan I've envisioned so far, I'll keep it in mind as I ponder the tree.

Yeah That's why I like posting my trees, as someone has a different eye and will think of something you haven't even considered, whether you like it or not, it's still a great thing to have!

It's just a circle of rigid styrofoam cut to the diameter about halfway down, with some holes. It's just so I can use the upper portion of pot where the diameter is bigger without overpotting. I will probably stop doing this, in my climate it makes overwintering more difficult if there's an elevated rootball in a pot.
It could also cause a top heavy balance to the pot which, if coupled with a bit of wind, could lead to a tipped over tree... Try some rocks or bricks next time, ought give you the same results without the imbalance and this isn't such a large pot that you won't be able to lift it...

Thanks Eric, I hadn't really thought of that but it could be a problem. I have used rocks and bricks before, sheets of fir bark from the firewood pile, all sorts of things..I'm going to avoid the practice now though preferring to have the rootball in contact with the ground for winters.

Today.,,
This developing bonsai stuff is not very fast is it?

Anyway, she lives. A fair bit more removed this spring, came off the back so it's hard to tell. image.jpg
This is another look towards the image I planned when I bent it last year. Hand is covering what will be sacrifice growth for a couple/few years. The entire left would be jinn/deadwood/Shari/carving.... The tree built upon the bits below my thumb and beside fingers. Kinda yamadori stylish I suppose.
Truthfully I'm still only half sold on that plan and still have options. There is still everything to go the informal upright route for example. image.jpg

I liked the first looks a lot...
But them future goggles ....you know...
I'm with you.

It looks as if you can stay needles small enough to work too.

Unfair it is...the guy who can find sick ass material in the mountains...also comes up with one of the best nursery finds as well!

Beautiful!

Good vision:D. Sometimes difficult to see tree among foliage.

I just use a sturdy pair of scissors & cut as much off the top as needed. Did you want to save the plastic pot for some reason?

Another scribble check of concept.

Used this pic. image.jpg

Erased and scribbled a bit. There's a couple things I'm still a bit skeptical of here but this is more or less what I was thinking when I bent the trunk a while back. Pretty much a green helmet on a cool trunk type of idea. image.jpg

Whatdya figure ? Nice idea? Possible, not possible? Off my rocker for some
Reason I can't see?

That's the way to go, I would go ahead and bring the main branch tip up. Cool tree!!

Man!

Looking at the first pic I was thinking a Shari would make that straight trunk look cooler.

Then I scrolled down!

Nice!

But I would hang on to at least one of those top left branches. The small one.

The GF had the same to say about those branches.
I'll hold on to one or two for a bit, at the least look into wiring/growing them for interesting jinn on the left side before removal. I'll reduce some more this year but probably hold onto enough for other options for at least one more year, Gigas vert for example is still possible. I think it's probably best to strengthen the keeper side for another season before Shari creation anyways. I'm thinking I might create the Shari progressively. Take a bit, allow it to form lateral callous, take a bit more etc.. Grow natural texture into the shari like BVF's diamonds sort of. It's slow but the canopy will need time anyways so it probably makes sense.

Thanks, I'm glad I've figured out how to make rough virts on the phone, had the idea in my head for a couple years now. It turns out nice in a virt, that's encouraging. I feel confident I can pull off something similar and good in time, if the snow ever melts..

I've taken screenshots of similar designs when I come across them. Here's one, probably familiar to someone here? I forget where I snapped it from. Sorry I can't credit it. image.jpg
It seems like usually with this sort of design the crown is kept lower, usually below the deadwood if there is any but dunno, I'm thinking of breaking that rule if it is a rule for this tree, we'll see I guess. image.jpg
