Anyone know of any sources (nurseries, collectors) that sell coastal redwoods? I'm looking for raw stock stumps, not saplings.

Thanks,
Lars

Saw some hella gnarled coastal stumps at BIB but couldn't tell you the name of the seller. Not helpful, just letting you know that someone somewhere has em. Just need to talk to some Cali guys, they might know who I'm talking about

Are redwoods hardy on the east coast?

Coast Redwoods need to be protected from freezing temps, they also need a dormancy. Finding that winter sweet spot to keep them in is the challenge. In the Detroit area, I winter mine successfully in a 3 seasons room at 50-55 degrees, I would not let them dip below 40 to play it safe.

I've bought two beauties from Bob and Zack Shimon myself, great people to work with.

fwiw, the lady in my club who keeps them nice and healthy, winters them in a basement that has windows that she keeps about 50F or less with humidity, another guy in my club claims they wont survive and hes killed a few, but when i asked him how he keeps them, he said un heated garage with no windows. there is another guy I've talked to from michigan who supposedly keeps both types as large trees planted in the ground just growing out in the open.. the Local bonsai shop owner keeps his in the hoop house, but mentioned he does have to fiddle and move the coastals when it gets too cold.. so I think they should do well in NC. I think the key with these might be to have a more moisture retentive soil mix so they dont dry out in the winter which could enable the roots to freeze.

@Waltron where about in Southern MI are you from and what club do you belong to? I'm in the Detroit area and always looking to share tips and advice on Coast Redwoods and Giant Sequoias. I grow both fairly successfully after years of trial and error. Neither tree conform to our winter climate so there are tricks to being successful with these.
