Nice move. Definitely will be a better tree now. I wonder if you should air layer the section above the first branch and end up with two amazing shohin though. Train the first branch as the new leader. But I like what you've decided either way.

I thought that but the leaves don't exactly reduce well and the flowers, if it ever does, are even larger.

True. Well either way is much better. Good luck this growing season! I have a few crabs that I air layered last year. First year in a pot. Close to the same size as yours.

Looking good catfish. Maybe get some wiring going on, esp the secondary trunk.

Thanks Judy. I would like to let that part grow upwards and out. This tree always want to grow lateral branches. I have wired some of the upper ones to a more upward angle. I'll probably just let it grow until they thicken (also heal the chop wound) then I will cut back for taper. I would still like to plant it in the ground some day to improve nebari.

just a quick winter picture update. i decided to put it back into the larger pot even though the tree doesn't seem to care too much. wired the branches a little. i'm not sure what the final planting angle will be but i figure the front will be the side opposite the chop. anyway i'm happy with it's development so far and look forward to this years growth.

This crabapple bonsai has come a long way. Today it's planted in a rectangular pot by Chuck Iker. Any opinions on the pot choice, position in the pot or angle? Any opinions or comments on the tree itself?

I realize that this tree still has a long way to go. The taper would be better had I trunk chopped sooner. Looking back, I should have made the cut the day it was collected.
