A little back story on this plant...

My grandfather, long ago, ran a nursery and landscaping business out of his house, at one time he had over 1000 azalea bushes growing on his property. The ones I used to run around, hide in, and jump out to scare my siblings, mom, and aunts, still line a portion of his driveway... So when he told me that he was going to be digging them up and moving them elsewhere about 2 years ago, I asked him if I could have a couple...

This past weekend, I was following some advice and cutting the roots at a distance from the tree in order to promote fibrous roots closer to the trunk... To my surprise, the tree only had roots pushing out to about a foot from the tree...

Keep in mind that this azalea is about 35~ years old, and has never been moved from this spot, though my grandfather regularly ditches around them in order to promote drainage from his driveway and garden downhill from there (a fact that I had forgotten).

Well, while I was trying to figure out how far out the roots were from the tree, I leaned on the shovel and the whole bush lifted... At this point I said "game on" and went to town... I pray that it stays healthy, and that it takes off. I'm going to get my hands on some fertilizer soon in order to acidify the new soil I put in with it, hopefully promoting root growth.

This is my first time trying to mess with an azalea, and I really hope I don't kill it, because of the memories associated with it... I think I'm better off right now due to not having to cut any roots.

Anyway, here's the Beast.

First group of pictures is where it's been for 30+ years, I think that's a 1/4 cup measuring cup.IMG_0927.JPG IMG_0928.JPG IMG_0929.JPG IMG_0930.JPG

Some pictures of it in the pot I transported it to my house in, and some close ups of it's trunk. Look at the character that's there... (There are two dead limbs that will need to be removed, and some dead trunk that I will need to figure something out with. And I need to take a soft bristled tooth brush to it and get the moss off it, because I read that it can cause rot. Azaleas have pretty soft deadwood. If you want to keep that interesting stump, try not to water the trunk. If it looks like it is rotting/rotten you might want to treat it.

I do need to treat it, because it's starting/has been rotting. Hopefully I can get some good guidance with the local club here in Baton Rouge.
