whether I bury most of the trunk or not.

You shouldn't have to there.

I would think you could easily leave it close with some sphagnum.

Hell, especially down there.

I covered my roots "appropriately" this year, and had roots running right on the surface, coming from too high.

A layer of sphag, once matted together, is easier to lift and look than digging in soil, and you will want to lift and look and remove those roots before they screw up your base.

I don't want to hijack Lance's thread, but here's my issue with my tree. The trunk is all kinds of awful, you can see it's not much for taper down low. I thought, maybe if I planted it much further down, it might help, maybe with the soil line at where the white rock is at, removing the rock of course.

Don't know them well...

But design wise, it would be kind of a not a raft. Acceptable?

If they back bud I'd whack it to that branch at the top of the pic...if it is a branch, then them low buds can become raft trunk, or regular branches to better an upright trunk.

For real!

@Alain if that cutting you had for me is still alive....we gotta get together and find something I can gift you for it!

And those trays you gave me drain so exeptionally well!

I think I will put them to use this year!

Lance, if I have seen these before...
I havent put 2 and 2 together!

Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

@LanceMac 10, how do you keep that looking so lush in the winter? Mine is doing OK, but no where near as happy as it is outside.

Sorry for a delayed response...been celebrating other people's birthdays!!o_O

It looks like it's dead from late September until late February:(:(:(:mad::mad::mad: Once it wakes up, it looks "normal" again!!:D:D:D:D:D

Flowers smell like Jasmine....very faint but I've got a bunch, so it's a nice change from the "funk" come fertilizing time....which folks in the house here will be dealing with shortly:p:p:p:p:p

For a coupleafew days.....well....it's REALLY bad!!

If you wanted to post some pics if you think you have an issue with the tree, feel free to threadbomb. They do grow better outside, like most trees!!:D:D:D:D Have to admit, I'm about done with tropicals in my climate. Too much hassle for too little reward....except for this one....and the six years I've spent figuring it out. Long way to go yet, the trunk is just not right(among other things)...

The new pot is gonna' drain some soil, that's for sure!! Just bought two big bags of Bonsai West soil.....

Maybe take half the bag?:eek: Turface, bark, gravel some fines...for deciduous, tropical and that sort of stuff, in my climate, this mix works pretty good.
If any body was wondering, I do use poo with this mix and we've never had a problem. Good repot schedule seems to keep the issue at bay.

Mine never looked like it was dead, but certainly not growing as vigorously as yours, kind of sparse, really long internodes. Been afraid to prune it, while indoors, and worried about dieback. Do you suggest repotting yearly? I got this tree for $5 on eBay, but is my very favorite. The cat is in her perch a/k/a my tree picture taking spot. I'll take one tomorrow. I suspect maybe not enough water, always afraid of overwatering.

@Carol 83 I'm not expert, but short of submerging the BRT in water, I don't really think you can overwater. I've been watering mine every day and it seems to enjoy it.

Just for the sake of chuckles... Here is mine that I have had for about a month... those two long branches were not there when I got it. It was just a stick with a few leaves now it has a two foot wing span20170313_173107.jpg . It likes it indoors I guess. What I don't know is when to repot and such...

My bud/neighbor doin' "the nasty" on his, May 30 '15.... @milehigh_7 I wouldn't have the foggiest of a good time to repot in a climate as extreme as yours!! Here, we like to work tropicals like this when the nights are high 50's or higher, usually around 60+ works good.

Two big roots doing the splits....bury it a little bit deeper and the image was much improve.
DSC00406 (1).JPG
Lots of roots, probably good for another year. But then it becomes a SERIOUS mat of armour....
DSC00407 (1).JPG
Cut back the roots a bit more after this photo was taken. It's still alive. Did have a couple branches with secondary branching loss. Not sure why yet, but I think some spots got shaded out/not properly managed for "balance"...these will make a dense canopy, lower branches need to be grown out longer/ upper branching pruned more often. For mine, ha, from the end of sept until late feb I don't need to prune, it looks dead!!!:eek::eek: But tell you what, come late feb, I comes in really even. Some more vigorous shoots look like shriveled pistachios before the break. Not too shriveled!!! This year mine gave me quite a surprise/show with all the flowers!!! They smell just like Jasmine!! Had a lot so it actually "flavored" the air near-by...nice!!! Organic pellet fert tomorrow though....the house will smell like a port-a-potty at OzzFest for a week or two......:eek::confused:o_O:D:D:D My popularity rankings take a hit in the house...according to "historical data"...:mad::mad::mad::mad::(

Brother Johnny...dude is still shredded, after all these years!!! Dick!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D
DSC00408 (1).JPG Does look a little bloated here...must be all the Twisted Tea's!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
