Hard to tell so far, but the lobes are not deeply cut, a bit like A. Japonicum or A. shirasawanum.

Maybe an A. palmatum from the amoenum group...

Thanks for your opinions. The trunk seems like the regular Palmatum but the shape of the leaves is still a mystery. I'll post more pics and one of the label as soon as I find it....
This is not being downsized to a bonsai though. My wife likes it like it is ;-)
I'll probably airlayer a crossing branch, we'll see!

Which doesn't mean I think it is ;) because:

The trunk seems like the regular Palmatum

The trunk of a shirasawanum is more in shades of brown, and the new shoots more angular.

Also, on my "regular" palmatums, the colours of the new leaves are much darker. But the soil conditions, etc, can influence that:

And here's what two seedlings of A. shirasawanum can look like:

Looks a lot like the Little Princess I have apart from your has more lobes.

Could be Kiyohime? Pic I pulled from the web not mine.

andrew, the color change throughout the growing season may also clue you in on the cultivar (green to orange in fall as opposed to green to red in fall, etc). i think it was the old greer garden catalogs that pointed this out well. i wish they hadn't taken down their nursery web site. the maples pics were great to browse through.

additionally, i expect that you'd have to allow for some variance for the yearly fall weather influence.

I don't think so @Cattwooduk. Mine is brighter, golden pale green and before they open are more "palmatum" than clearly divided. The trunk goes from dark red to green, not coral like that in the picture. Thanks for the tip ;-)

If you have time, look at this.
http://www.maillot-erable.com/pdf/catalogues/catalogue-japanese-maples-en.pdf

The catalogue is "interactive". When you click cultivar name it'll take you to the shop and provide you with more pics and info.
Goodness! That's crazy how many cultivars there are of JM. My own shipping I'm good with just knowing its a JM. I'm not even going to attempt to guess at which it is, not with the large group it could come from.

They're folding out. I think it might be a regular A. Palmatum... The light yellowish/golden color could be because of the soil but the lobes are clearly divided now.

Yes, it looks like regular Acer palmatum now.

Still looking good, and healthy, and much easier to shape than A. shirasawanum ;)

I should have imagined that, being you an Imperial Masterpiece! ;-)

Lol sides hurt from laughing...

When ones comment on such...it always amuses me. I never pay attention to that title added to members, or even pay attention to see who is what. But...many comment on it.
