Nutters,

A cutting from my original Ben, I put it on this (melted asphalt Rockish type material) rock about a year ago.
The rock is about 4-5 inches with about an inch over the soil now, I intend to expose it to an inch under the soil in spring, and maybe pot it proper.

It will stand about 8-9 inches from soil to top then, as the tree from the rock to top is roughly 5-6 inches.

Some notes.
This is the only one kept out in summer. Brought in once at 50 degrees and placed under 16 hr fluorescents, IT DROPPED NO LEAVES.
I cut it back twice already since fall. Once to backbud(and remove a 1.5ft sacrifice), once for selection.
I bought some Vigoro slow release pellets in spring that I never used. 16-4-8 for outdoor stuff.
I dosed all my ficus with it about 2 weeks ago. Overdosed. By about 10 times considering.
They are going apedung. Which makes for an interesting winter!

I will update after spring repot.

That's quaint. I'm a fan.

You've taken this guy quite far and added a lot of character in a short time, I'm impressed sorce! Its turning into something real nice.

You know, after all this time on the forum I just realized while writing this post that I don't know your real name! That is, unless its Sorce...

I don't know how I missed that JoeR! Apologies and Many thanks!

My government name is Mike.

But for a few solid reasons I have considered legally changing my name to.......

For a few records....

Phone took a dump so @Leo in N E Illinois @iOne @GrimLore @Alain and anyone else who has my number, I'm going to have lost your contact information.

on a tree note...

I come back looking at old pics on the big screen....

The trunk on this sure is getting thicker...

I have a bunch of long roots growing out and down into the drip tray, I'm going to put them into earth.
I reckon by fueling the base and constantly hacking the top all summer with the added vigor of earth, I can flip flop the "as seen from most angles" reverse taperish thing this is doing.

the rockish type thing may be completely crushed....whatevs.

on a pot materials note....

my ginseng ficus has a root out through my basket material....it is twice the thickness of the hole directly outside the hole and my basket material holds up.

You've put an amazing amount of work into this, and I like the result! It's a really powerful looking tree, especially the branches. It reminds me of a muscular alien monster getting ready to ravage a city (hopefully D.C.). I like the effort you put into the little details.

This is out.
Little quarantine for mites, stems went dark, but the leaves didn't white burn like the Giant out in full 87degree sun last week!

I'm setting this in the ground about as deep as it sits in the tray. Official B.O.P then. Bring out prune.

Huge year for this bastard!

Great work bro!!!! you already know!!!

Thanks for keeping this progression updated. And to all others here that do. I need to do the same and get some progressions put together. I just can't find the time man...I try.

So I commend you with the kids and life still pushing that shit aside to do this. Having kids threw me in a spin that I'm still grasping....still spinning just not dizzy anymore LOL

I know you said it has never lost it's leaves, but have you ever defoliated it yet?

All or mostly every spring and fall.

Bro...
I been telling her to let these kids starve if they won't eat for years.
Now she bout had a breakdown at the grocery store yesterday.

My Grandma, "this is not a restaurant, there is no menu, and when my kitchen is closed its closed!"

I just realized how big the parenting problem is.
They run us, we stress, and they don't get proper guidance.

Whooping!

I unintentionally solid punched my little guy in the arm for walking out into the street without looking the other day.
But he ain't done it since.

Gave him a good lickin for something else dangerous the other day too. Ain't done that again either.

Ain't no fixing my daughter though. Slap her in her 35 year old mouth and she laughs!
The other day she asked me if she's going to grow up to be black..(like goth black)
That conversation went how it went...
Divorce...depression...Probly not....
You'll keep your bright style !

She cries at the slightest hint of "someone leaving her life", moving family, retiring teachers....just like I used to!

She's a sweetheart so I let her keep her tough "human mimicry " outward appearance. Like me!

Whoa! Rizant !

"I just realized how big the parenting problem is.

This is what I'm dealing with now. she is about to turn 2. Screams at the top of her lungs all day! Everything sets her off like yours. Every transition. Getting in the car from home, screams all the way to the store. Getting out of the car, sreams until she gets back in the car. It's so bad we cannot go to stores together anymore as a family.

I don't even take her to bonsai shops b/c I fear disturbing the peace of the trees. Her scream is ear peircing! and she goes on for like an hour straight. Mental torture for me and the wife. Plus I work from home, so I listen to this 24/7.

Mine needs Serious discipline, just can't yet she isn't old enough. I am losing it though won't lie.

Mentally stuck on all my trees, mentally stuck on anything that requires creativity for weeks. I can't wait for her to just SHUT UP LOL

sorry had to vent too my bad!

I'm interested to see how this works out for you. From what I've read about this, the trees don't have time to get established and growing before being dug back up again. They start spreading roots then nope, time to come back inside.

The big one behind this'n escaped last year and took a pencil sized branch to uncooked brat size! https://bonsainut.com/threads/purpose-of-the-past-post-giant-ficus.17047/page-4#post-416985

As you know my Wife has a bunch of tropicals including Ficus. What we found here the first Spring we took them out in 2014 is that hey all really did shitty in full East West exposure. We moved them out back in an area shaded by a Red Japanese Maple and they grow quite vigorous there as do Maple trees. At the old place we did not realize how much the very large trees actually filtered the light as the plants appeared to be in full sun...

So far since then we found very few plants actually handle true FULL sun such as Banana, Bird of Paradise, Cedar, Spruce, Elms, and Fruit trees. Some flora of course love it as well. Most types of Roses just hate it too...

Nice progression! I have just seen this.
... ...
If you really break the branch, twist and leave it on for long, they should stay.
I had a trunk(other tree) I really didn't want to spring back, so I slit it with a razor.
Cut healed and it is not gonna move now!
How exactly do you do this, may I ask?
This is species dependent I suppose?

Wise Grandma!!!
I have never managed to apply this either to my children or my grandchildren, though....

Ain't no fixing my daughter though. Slap her in her 35 year old mouth and she laughs!
35 years old daughter!!! How old are you, Sorce/boy?

I posted my Twist trick shortly after here...
https://www.bonsainut.com/posts/454656/

That razor cut tree is one ficus that actually healed nice, out of many trees.

My daughter is 7!
I'm. 38.

There are roots already escaped that Have been circling the drip dish.

Better pics of another Similair one...
https://www.bonsainut.com/posts/457960/

This one had about as much root, but I had a little stub cutting with one Leaf That made one root...so I had to tend it. And couldn't get pics.
