Which top to choose?

So, I collected this little tree which is potentially either a hackberry or a chokecherry, but the leaves aren't out enough yet to really confirm species.
It ended up being taller than it looked when I was digging it out, it was crowded in with a bunch of other younglings, and now I'm stuck.
I think the current canopy is too high up to be to scale, or to look nice.
But should I just chop it off and hope it survives and then develop the smaller lower branches into the canopy?
Or slowly prune back and weaken the top one to encourage the lower branches to grow and just kind of slowly crop them all off?
I liked the twists it has in its trunk, but it's too tall.
Where do you think would be a good place to trim? And when?

Or... you could take an air-layer off the top two feet, and then another air-layer off the next two feet, and end up with two shorter trees and a little stump

That is an excellent idea.
See, this is why I ask questions. Because someone almost always manages to come up with an idea I wouldn't have thought of myself.
