Yes this was just done this past April.

Sorry sorce, I cannot effectively answer this question as my experience is yet limited in working with spruce. Perhaps others can chime in with more specifics.

I just purchased a colorado blue spruce from Todd, the first spruce in my collection! I got one of his less expensive ones since I don't have any experience with the species. I plan to wait till fall to style it since it's already pushing new growth now. I hope it will be a good learning experience for me. I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread for wisdom and inspiration! Can't wait to see how this one comes together, great job!

You did.

They say wire from August thru winter...

I have only wired in January.

Mixed success.

Chops dormant seem ok.

But I Think cold Wiring hurts....

Just notes.

General Spruce.

Thanks Grant! Yes definitely wait now until the fall which will be a better time to work on them again. Extremely tough trees that are rugged but able to be refined. Have fun and good luck with yours! :)

Well I can say this. I failed to listen to my own advice, and due to a very busy spring schedule, I decided to wire some of my maples in January to try and stay ahead. The result: dead branches on a couple of my better maples. Interestingly enough, those branches that were not wired were all fine and the few that did die back were all wired. Although this is specific to maples (and my frigid climate), I do wonder if generally this holds some truths across species?

This goes back to my....

It's easier to kink a dry hose theory.

When the Sap ain't flowing...
It's easy to kink.
Kinked hose can't sap up.

Pretty sure this is a Northern Applicable Theory.

Mauro really tore this tree a new asshole, but it looks great. Glad to see it's recovering well. What has been your aftercare besides misting? Heavy ferts? Partial shade or full sun?
