I recently contacted Don Blackmond to see if he had any spruce and he sent me this pic of a collected Black Hills Spruce. He made a great deal and I couldn't pass it up. I haven't had a chance to take any pics of it at my place yet, so this is Don's photo from last September.

I was able to smooth this over with the wife by telling her that I bought a spruce because it reminded me of the hikes we did together on our honeymoon in Maine. She seemed to like that.

A variegated boxwood from my local garden nursery's "Lemon Sale" last summer.

Is it naturalistic?

The hole/gap in the left side canopy bugs me. Fix that and I think I've got $5 worth of lemonade .
IMHO, I'm starting to get this artsy designy stuff.
Practice, practice, practice.

Beautiful things you do with those Junipers! It will be something special one day. ;)

Well, the eagle landed at a quarter past midnight last night. It took Ryan and myself to bring it into the garden, and may I say not too comfortably either. It is HEAVY!!! Well past the 3 foot mark from soil level. It is about one of the biggest and gnarliest things I've seen in deciduous bonsai. Is it ok to admit I am scared of a tree?? Pics do not even begin to convey its massive appearance.

@davetree: It is well on its way but needs further development via branch extensions in combo with approach and thread grafts. Some sections are too long and straight so needs some heavy bending and/or cut backs to keep improving the taper. My biggest challenge: Not to try and tame it.

Please stay tuned. I will open up a thread with lots more background on this tree soon. :)

Elm this morning now occupying center stage in the garden. Apologies for the distracting bkg.
