I bought this sometime this year...I've not so much as put wire in it. Even though Scott warned me to toss some wire on it. So thinking it will all need cut back and try again. So...wondering if it can be used for this contest or not? I did pick up material something for the contest...but plan on working this...and wasn't sure if I could slip it in as Mame...? I'm not sure what the final size will end up. It may fall out of the category to shohin while in development stages. Which is why I bought the one today for the contest.

3 months to Find something.
Challenge 1.

Into pot by year one update.
Challenge 2.

Keeping it alive in pot...
With some development.
Challenge 3.

Too soon to pot...
Too dead...
Or too boring...
For lack of. Development.

So final month when tree years from now is judged? Trying to consider pot color already...spring or fall complimenting glaze? Thinking fall...three months from now. So fall colors.

I was thinking about pots minutes ago!

Most of mine are under 4.5inches..

I have a creamish pinkish Iker.

:)

Sorce

Sweet! It's gotta be sweet! An Iker!
I have two qualifier pots which is the wrong feel but closer to size I'm wanting. I have a few at 4 1/2" but feel to large possibly for the trees in question. I have small accent pots but to much so leaning toward accent. So...pot hunting for me! :D
I need glazed pots. So the non-glaze is out...and the other I am thinking to masculine/rustic for the feel I'm going with. I've a year...but I am curious if the Goji can come out and play.

Thats cool then everyone has 3 months to get it in the pot
ill post the entry thread with rules on saturday the 20th
Now this is pretty damn interesting. Start a contest in May, and three months to get it into a pot meaning that more than half the world will be embroiled in the summer months of temp around 105 for weeks. Around August 20th? Your crazy. No one in their right mind will take a tree out of a can place it in a half cup of soil and expect it to live on.....

Thats why you don't see so many mame, people have no idea how to care for small trees.......

This months plus year plus year and months plus year and months idea is less then ideal. May I throw out this to simplify it?:

contest starts June 1 2017

Part 1) everyone has until Sept 1 2017 to find their tree(s)

Part 2) Sept 1 2018 Not yet dead trees must be in a mame pot (you can put your dead tree in a mame pot and we can make another thread to vote on the best dead tree at the end?)

Part 3) Sept 1 2019 Show your tree is not dead, the most beautiful not dead tree by way of choosing most bestest tree somehow, is deemed worthy to gloat a little bit and gets all the internet points.

Part 4) Vote on best dead tree in a mame pot!

I would like to throw out ideas for candidate trees

tree that have way too many branches (big box store nursery stock or over grown trees on your property)

trees that have no branches (such as cutting a big tree down to a branchless stump)

Air layers

"yamadori" something grown in the ground that is not on your property (or at least the part of your property you maintain)

A few other potential rules:

Maybe not allow trees that are already in a bonsai pot unless it is without branches?

A broad view picture of where the tree is growing, with the tree in the pic, before harvest for competition, unless it is an air layer. (this is it in the big box store or this is the forest I am about to dig it out of etc) receipts are good too?

Maybe a part of the the points can go to how the tree was acquired? Best story gets a point or something? The person that climbs a thirty foot crabapple for an air layer gets a foot up on the person that buys a Lowes juniper.

I'm just trying to think of ways to keep everyone on an even playing field and keeps it fun for participants and watchers alike.
