I picked up this little Beech from Andy at the Bonsai shed, https://www.facebook.com/Thebonsaished/

This is its first styling

I figured the straight branch overlapping the main trunk had to go, it had no movement or taper

The tree reminded me of a beech i'd seen in richmond park, i felt i could try this, hence the cut back

Just needs to fill out a little now,

however, i quite like the natural and airy look, but the ramification can be improved on.

I like that a lot. Judging by leaf size it's not american beech, right? If it is I'm heading to the bonsai nursery right now

At the end of june this tree was fully defoliated, its given me a second flush with more compact growth and tighter nodes closer in, its had some pruning too and all the wire came off, its still growing/extending
Defoliation june 2017 by Bobby Lane, on Flickr

All the scars/cuts were hollowed out and some stain has been added to help them blend in a little

The tree also gave me a new shoot right at the base where a previous branch was removed, this shoot will be left to extend and become part of the design, it will give the tree even more interest and depth

plan is just to keep a tight/compact canopy, keep node length down by pruning, over winter can re wire

Excellent work, as always! I love how the European beeches seem to handle lots of work.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Im getting strong second flushes on all my three green Beeches that were fully defoliated. they have to be growing strongly and vigorously before though, well established and not heavily root pruned that season. they can take hard work if all those requirements are met.

You can't have too many Beech in the collection if youre serious about bonsai;)

Thanks, very happy with the outcome and should get some nice development in this training tub.

Hi folks, here's a an update on this one, its been growing strongly

IMG_6526 by Bobby Lane, on Flickr

yest i took the wire off and wired the new extensions in the middle to go upwards, i'd like to get more length and girth in the trunks
20180524_115858 by Bobby Lane, on Flickr

this vigorous section of branch cut back to let light into the two lower ones

Nice leaf size, the tree was defoliated last season and the leaves have kept a nice size this season, this might go into a small crate next season for further development, i'd like some swelling in the base and all around

some callus rolling in around the Uro, not that im too bothered about wounds on trees because i see them all the time on real trees. beeches will actively produce callus around wounds, similar to hornbeam, i find that kyonal or cut paste really helps too, for anyone interested
